You can use the large dial on the back to intensify the colours, give the picture certain colour casts or take pictures in black and white or sepia. Both tactile and satisfying, turn the Lens Ring on the Mini Evo to cycle through the 10 lens effects. While it may not win over analogue enthusiasts, with digital practicality and an incredibly stylish design to boot, the Instax Mini Evo may very well be one of the best instant cameras on the market today.

An instant camera for the 21st century, the Mini Evo allows you to preview your shots before you take them, tweak the exposure, add filters and flash, then print and share your shots to social media. In fact, Fujifilm boasts that the Evo can make images that benefit from 100 different combinations of effects. Using an app on your phone, you can send pictures from your smartphone to the camera via Bluetooth and print them out. Because had Sony not coined that catchy phrase in 2008 it might’ve been used just as well by Fujifilm today to market their newest Instax camera.By purchasing anything using these links, Casual Photophile may receive a small commission at no additional charge to you. Instax Mini film may not look as good in full resolution on your laptop, but they’re decent enough to post on your Instagram feed. With built-in Bluetooth, the mini Evo can transfer images in seconds for you to have your memories in the world as an iconic credit-card-sized print. I’ve spent the past couple of months shooting the Mini Evo, and though there are two or three problems with the camera, it really is a wonderful thing.

It even works as an Instax photo printer to print any picture or image from a smartphone via its own dedicated app (which works surprisingly well). Experiment with the vividness, go retro, add softness to the focus, lose the colour - it's your shot, there's 100 ways to capture it, take control. If you’re into the idea of instant film photography but don’t want some cheap kit or loads of prints going in the bin, this is the one to get. Just then the sun burned one small window through the clouds, casting lonely rays onto the light station. When it comes to the menus and interface, there’s loads of shared DNA between this and the Instax Mini LiPlay, which is a bit simpler but also blends digital and instant photography.

In the black and chrome-coloured combination, the hybrid instant camera Instax Mini Evo is reminiscent of analog camera classics from the 1960s and 1970s. I’m particularly fond of the blue filter effect, which evokes the look of old Technicolour film, and the double exposure is also lots of fun to use. While it may have a digital heart, the Mini Evo’s prints retain much of the same character you’d find with other Instax cameras. Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery is used to power the camera and supports printing up to approximately 100 images per charge.

It does, however, suffer from all the same issues that the LiPlay does, such as the subpar LCD screen (compared to modern electronics), underpowered image sensor (which suffers from banding and artefacting even in relatively simple scenes), and shots that are betrayed by their low resolution if you don't print them out (meaning your phone is a better instant option).

Instax Mini film is cute and fun, and they fit all snuggly wuggly into those similarly cute Instax Mini photo albums we see on the shelves in Target.
