About the only moving parts on the whole watch are the pushbuttons, secured by tiny c-clips holding back springs and gaskets. I find AE-1200 very nice watch and also suitable for thin wrists despite its big size (I have both - thin wrist and the watch). None of the edges are terribly crisp, but where that might bug me on a metal watch, I didn’t think twice about them on this plastic unit.

The analog clock is very handy because it shows the time under various modes (in stopwatch mode, timer etc). The first is drilled lugs – always a plus and particularly so on a watch with lugs as short and tight as this one. If you are looking to upgrade your AE1200 strap (and you should) I cannot recommend the Vario straps strongly enough.It is a lot by any standard, most of it is unnecessary, and some is downright ugly, like the “Word Time” and “Illuminator” emblazoned across the case.

I had the 1300 and it was great for what it was, a sports oriented watch with multiple timers and one alarm. I was pleased to see how the guards around the buttons are so clearly defined, but that plastic mold parting line around the mid-case is pretty awful. At first, it feels a little strange wearing a strap that is heavier than the watch, but not unpleasant. Like the vast majority of Casio watches, it is made to be used hard, so even though it does not have a massive, bulletproof case like a G-Shock, it is still good for a very useful 100m water resistance and has a 10-year battery life. While the two square models (1200/1300) are a little better with 2 LED lights, all the round models have only 1 LED and give obviously uneven lighting across the face of the watch.It is perhaps the AE1200’s defining feature, and the 12-year-old boy in me (who is closer to the surface than I would care to admit) delighted in playing with it. It wasn’t enough for an electronic multifunction watch to be a wrist computer, it also had to look like a computer and not a real one but the kind we might imagine being in a Bond villain’s lair. To be honest, the color coating on its resin case is not going to weather nicks and scratches without wearing off, but when the watch costs less than most straps, “Oh, heavens! This watch will accept standard 16mm Casio adapters and can have a Nato or Zulu straps installed no problem. For the AE-1200 model, I felt that the display of the day of the week was somewhat less readable and also, found the analog display to be a waste of space(world map didn't seem to be of much use either).
