Description

As a fan and collector of Monkie Kid, I'm of two minds about these two sets. For me personally, they feel a bit inessential—the "hero" characters are all repeats from earlier sets (albeit good ones, and in MK's case a rare variant), while the "villain" characters are in one of the larger sets as well. These sets also don't have much else that's exclusive, apart from those tasty-looking Trans Bright Green blades in Mei's jet. That the model stands is itself an engineering miracle, for just how heavy the final build actually feels. Yet, in stabilising its weight, securing its knees and minimising the mobility of the other joints, this is a giant mech that can’t move all that much. If at all. In "A LEGO Journey to the East" LEGO concept artist Xin Chen, compared the transformation of the Monkey Mech to Sailor Moon's transformation sequence. After the Demon Bull King stated that MK isn't the Monkey King just because he has the Golden Staff, MK agrees but says that he's the Monkie Kid. MK then creates the Monkey Mech to defeat the Demon Bull King with it.

However, their combined design could enhance opinions of these sets, as I think the assembled powered-up mech looks fantastic! After detaching the boosters, the mech remains nicely finished. The pearl gold details look good and I appreciate the repeated use of teal across the model. Furthermore, the actual connection points are subtle, as the boosters are secured with clips and Technic axles. You could also use these clips to store minifigure accessories. Her new outfit is quite the deviation from her previous ones. There is almost no white to be seen. Whereas before Mei wore a white outfit with trimmings of gold and greens, she has fully jumped on the neon-yellow hype train and made her torso just that! As it is, we have two giant mechs to sit on the shelves and look menacingly awesome, just so long as they aren’t asked to change stance, or walk. And don’t dust them too heavily because things will ping off, argh! — LEGO Monkie Kid 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech characters — I’m sure there is a die-hard fan out there that is at the ready to sweep this setup and get make that mech their own, but as a fan collector who has built the other set, this one doesn’t do it for me.

Unless you were after that design upgrade, in which case, the value you are looking for isn’t here. — LEGO Monkie Kid 80045 Monkey King Ultra Mech pictures —Smaller vehicles detaching from larger ones has been an ever-present feature of original LEGO themes, including NINJAGO, Legends of Chima and now Monkie Kid. However, this instance is more complex than most, as the detachable jet comprises four sections and the central thruster assembly must still be reconfigured, before the blades are attached.
