Some people like to keep the sand bath in their hamster’s cage so it has the option every day, whereas others like to offer it less frequently. Badesand til hamstere While other rodents don’t necessarily need a sand bath, it is a daily necessity for chinchillas, and so they need a certain quality sand to help them effectively clean themselves.

A sand bath is quite different to the regular sort of bath we might give our pet dogs, for example. Gerbils should be given somewhere to sleep, like a nest box. We don't advise plastic as they can shred and ingest this. They have strong teeth and will chew through it. Chinchilla’s also shed their fur when frightened; this is a defence mechanism so predators are left with a mouthful of fur. Your chinchilla should be fed on a diet of specially prepared chinchilla pellets, which your pet will typically sit up and hold between its front paws. I say Chinchilla “sand” because that’s what was available here in Denmark. Not sure it’s the same as “dust”? Anyway, the fine grain meant that extra careful cleaning of the sleepers was needed, and even then I missed some.

Caring for your gerbils

Chinchillas should be offered a bath once a day, for about 20 minutes. If the bath is left longer than this, it may become soiled and your chinchilla won’t want to use it. However, there is always the chance that their fur could get a little dirty, or oily, no matter how clean their surroundings are. Chinchillas are most active in the early evening, so this is a good time to get them out for a run. The breeder should ask you lots of questions and offer information about how to care for chinchillas

With regular dust baths, and providing their teeth are in good condition, chinchillas can maintain their own fur. Handling your chinchillas Don't add lots of deep bedding or toys to the tank, as this may increase territorial behaviour. Add some pieces of cardboard so they can still chew and make a nest area. Make sure the bath is in a safe and quiet place to ensure bathing is a fun and enjoyable experience for your pet. If your fur baby feels scared or nervous, they probably won’t exhibit their normal wild behaviours and bath time just won’t be as fun. I very much like that photo of Arthur Challis. I'm afraid coal merchants have been a bit marginalised at Farthing so far. Even the single coal trolley present has been shamelessly re-purposed! Give each chinchilla their own dust bath, but swap these over daily so that they get used to each other’s scent – you can also swap cage furniture between cagesCages should have plenty of enrichment (or activities) for the gerbil and deep bedding for them to burrow in Adult gerbils (ie over ten weeks old) can be aggressive towards any newcomers. Females are often more aggressive than males, so pairings work best with a neutered male and a female, but you can bond the same sex with slow introductions. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 means all pet owners have a legal duty of care to their pets. Anyone who is cruel to an animal or is found not to be providing the five animal welfare needs, as listed below, can be Chinchillas can particularly benefit from dust bathing because of their super fluffy coat. Their coat is so soft because they have many hairs coming out of each of their individual hair follicles (up to 50 hairs per follicle) but this also makes their coat extremely dense. A very dense coat is much more difficult to dry- so it’s best to avoid ever getting a chinchilla wet.

Antarctic railway. The grey DAS I use dries up white. OK as a base, but a bit too smooth for what I wanted.Don't clean your gerbils out during the introduction process. Wait until they've been together for three days and are snuggling up to sleep (this is a great sign!), then you can clean them out. When introducing your chinchilla to the bath sand, it’s essential to do so in a calm and controlled manner. Place the container of bath sand in your chinchilla’s cage and allow it to approach the sand on its own.

If your chinchillas are still fighting you can try giving a specialist behavioural expert a call to get some advice. Bundstrøelse til marsvin Note: Changing the sand regularly, at least once a week, is essential to ensure it remains clean. Choosing the right type of chinchilla bath sand Chinchillas are delightful pets to own, but how do you keep them clean? Can you bathe chinchillas? Yes! But not with water. Gerbils will also appreciate a quieter spot in your home. They communicate using ultrasonic frequencies. This means they can be sensitive to ultrasound eg TVs, running water or vacuum cleaners. So it's best to house them away from any of these to reduce their stress levels.Typically chinchillas should bathe for three to five minutes per session. The sand in a chinchilla bathhouse should be about 2 inches deep so the chinchilla can move around and get fully covered with dust. Good idea to add some straw. I like a relatively uncluttered look, but a lot can be indicated with a few bits in the right place. A proper manure pit will be built on the adjoining module that I am planning. To use chinchilla bath sand, you should fill a shallow container with the sand and place it in the cage. Allow your chinchilla to roll around in the sand for 10-15 minutes, then remove the container from the cage.
