Chance Boudreaux (Van Damme) is the target of an evil mercenary (Lance Henriksen, Aliens ) who recruits combat veterans for the “amusement” of his clients—bored tycoons who will pay a half a million dollars to stalk and kill the most challenging prey of them all: Man. Throughout the film, Woo pulls out all the stops to transpose his style to the larger budget of an American production.

However, I was quite surprised to see plenty of fluctuations during the darker and nighttime footage that often introduce minor but rather odd softness. Excellent looking Steelbook with great extras as per the pics, however no video extras as they were on the DVD.

The included Blu-ray contains the same audio commentary as well as quite a few other supplements starting with the excellent From Hard Boiled to Hard Target, a thirteen minute interview with John Woo where he talks about the differences between the Hong Kong and Hollywood systems, his thoughts on working with Chuck Pfarrer and with Van Damme (who he says really loved Hong Kong film), getting along with his producers (especially Sam Raimi), his personal love of Alain Delon's films and Van Damme's resembelnce to him from certain angles, the importance of making his actors look great, changes that were made to the dialogue during the shoot, borrowing from the end of Hard-Boiled for the ending of this movie, running into issues getting final approval after editing the film with Bob Murawski, having more creative freedom in Hong Kong than in Hollywood and what he learned about Hollywood and America from working on the film. Also fans of Van Damme all no doubt agree that this is one of the muscles from Brussels best films, not only for the awesome action pieces but also the high production values on display. The film reportedly has around 20 minutes of footage STILL missing from its original version submitted to the MPAA. The incredibly fancy (and, truth be told, a little more expensive) Steelbook format is the only choice for those needing a physical media release that doubles as a table tennis bat in a pinch. Brand New 4K Restoration of the Unrated International Cut – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative!

I would have loved to see what JCVD has to say about this movie today but apparently, an interview just wasn’t in the cards for this release. When things get dangerous, Chance has Natasha hide out with his Uncle Douvee (Wilford Brimley) out in the bayou, but Van Cleef and Fouchon aren't going to take any of this lightly. Laced with dark humour and slam-packed with electrifying action, Hard Target is a must-see for action fans. Presenting the 100-minute international cut—and not, as many hoped, John Woo’s proper 116-minute director’s cut, material for which exists in too poor a condition for official release—this transfer does reveal a bit of wear and dirt here and there. Not until the big action climax in the last half-hour does Hard Target really start to feel like a proper John Woo movie. While it would have been great not to go through the disc replacement process, KLSC's new disc that should be arriving in mailboxes and in new purchases is a welcome upgrade. This wasn't always noticeable as so much of the mix is fairly front/center focused, but when there was some movement you could easily notice the problem. picture is very bright, but colors can look a little overcranked at times, with skin tones that veer towards orange. Several cuts later and we had a film with considerably less violence and also more of a focus on Van Damme, at the expense of the other actors: reportedly even Van Damme himself sat down with the editors to deliver an alternative cut, which trimmed away the development of the antagonists in the film in favour of more of himself, allegedly because "audiences were paying to see Van Damme, not Lance Henriksen".

Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc, including the actual color values of this content. Cast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Yancy Butler, Lance Henrikson, Arnold Vosloo, Wilfred Brimley, Kasi Lemmons. As it turns out, however, their last victim had a daughter named Nat (Yancy Butler) who arrives from out of town looking for her dad. You don't expect to see Wilford Brimley kick ass in an action film, he was no spring chicken when he made this picture, but kick ass he does and the movie is all the better for having him in it. JCVD Still pumps out some fun movies, but nothing has come close to the excellence that is Hard Target. But Chance quickly learns that the old man was actually killed by wealthy hunters in a game organized by a ruthless businessman (Lance Henriksen, The Terminator, No Escape). Andrew Hernandez on Jake Gyllenhaal goes full on Jackie Chan in the Trailer for Doug Liman’s ‘Road House’ also starring Conor McGregor Natasha connects her father to a man named Randal Poe (Eliott Keener) who, unbeknownst to her, is the man who has been connecting Fouchon with the homeless men he's been hunting, knowing that their combat experience will make them a challenge but that their homeless status means they won't be missed. I remember watching this movie as a kid and loving all the slow motion action scenes from john woo and being a van damme fan too was a bonus.

Henriksen vs Van Damme is a nine minute interview with Lance Henriksen that goes over how he got his start doing live theater before making the movie to film work, how much he loved working with John Woo and how well they got along on set, getting some changes made to the script based on his input, his appreciation for New Orleans, adlibbing on the film, why his character uses the gun he has in the film, the musicality of the picture and Woo's work and trying to be authentic on camera. Still, Hard Target is likely best remembered for its ecstatic goofiness, marrying Woo’s wild formalist techniques with a host of late-’80s and early-’90s American action tropes. The supplemental features on the release include new program with John Woo; new programs with actors Larce Henriksen and Yancy Butler; new program with stunt coordinator Billy Burton; new audio commentary recorded by critics Brandon Bentley and Mike Leeder; and remastered original trailer. While it could be argued that 1994’s Time Cop was his last great movie, his pinnacle action star best is 1993’s Hard Target. The most memorable shot from this film, the metal arrow flying through the air, is a blatant Sam Raimi shot).

Density levels are good, Fluidity is much better as well, so if you view on a larger screen this will be a substantial improvement that you will have a very easy time appreciating. One of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s most successful movies – in box office terms certainly – is the mightily good fun Hard Target. Luckily, Boudreaux is pretty handy with a gun, and when he doesn’t have a gun, he’s even better at kicking bad guys in the face, which he does a lot! A film that attracted no shortage of controversy in the UK on its original release, submarine thriller U-571 earned ire for its rewriting of World War II history.
