Description

India is known as the land of festivals and each festival celebrated here is known for its rituals and traditions and this has made the Indian festivals so much popular, significant, and considerable. Talking about India and the festivals that are celebrated here, the list is endless and with the changing season, there are two to three festivals revolving around the corner. And now, as the whole year has changed, the circle of the festival will be starting again. And, the first festival that will be celebrated is Lohri. As the couple walks around the fire, guests gather around to cheer and clap. (Usually outside, but this can also be done inside in a controlled, fire-safe environment.) May this Lohri festive season bring the best opportunities for you and your every dream get fulfilled, this New Year. Happy Lohri!! The collections gathered by the children are known as Lohri and consist of til, gachchak, crystal sugar, gur (jaggery), moongphali (peanuts) and phuliya or popcorn. Lohri is then distributed at night during the festival. Till, peanuts, popcorn and other food items are also thrown into the fire. For some, throwing food into the fire represents the burning of the old year and start the next year on Makar Sankranti.

This Lohri, may you enjoy every second of this harvest festival with the sweetness of rewris, moongfalis, and popcorns! Happy Lohri to you. Every Lohri party involves a bonfire, song, and dance. The fire represents purity, and it comes into play when the couple being celebrated (either the newlyweds or new parents) walk around the fire several times while throwing peanuts and popcorn– aka “seeds”– into the fire. Unlike baby showers in the U.S., however, you can have unlimited Lohris. So, if the couple has 5 kids, they’ll have a Lohri party for every one of them. Indian people love a party! The collections gathered by the children are known asLohriand consist of til, Gachchak, crystal sugar, Gur (Jaggery), Moongphali (Peanuts) and phuliya or popcorn. Lohri is then distributed at night during the festival. One of the most famous Lohri songs out there, which you can expect to hear at every Lohri, is “Sundar Mundariye” aka the “Lohri” song, which was popularized by Harbhajan Mann. It tells a Robinhood-like story that takes place in Punjab. (And it’s just one of many old folklores associated with Lohri.) In India, people usually give money (a similar amount to what you’d give at a wedding). Still, this is mostly something that only old-school Indian aunts and uncles do. They can be worn during Lohri celebrations and on other occasions and will hold a very special meaning for the recipient. May the divine fire of this Lohri festival burns all the sadness of your life and bring more joy, happiness, prosperity, and love! Wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Lohri. Many believe the name comes from the word Loh, meaning the light and warmth of fire – some people in rural Punjab call Lohri ‘lohi’.

Lohri brightened by festive spirit - Times of India". The Times of India. 14 January 2015 . Retrieved 12 January 2017.This not only spreads happiness but also aligns with the ethos of sharing and caring that Lohri embodies. They will not only add to the element of fun during Lohri celebrations but also allow the recipient to learn a new skill.

Mindful colouring seems to be very similar to meditation in that while colouring children can lose themselves so fully in colouring at that particular moment, they forget all of their worries and stress. Lohri is an official holiday in Punjab, [5] [6] Jammu [7] and Himachal Pradesh. [8] The festival is celebrated in Delhi and Haryana but is not a gazetted holiday. [note 2] In all these areas, the festival is celebrated by Sikhs, Hindus and whoever wants to enjoy. [10] In Punjab, Pakistan it is not observed at official level; however, Sikhs, Hindus and some Muslims observe the festival in rural Punjab and in the cities of Faisalabad and Lahore. [11] [12] [13] [14] Muhammad Tariq, former director of Faisalabad Arts Council, believes it is important to keep the festival alive as Lohri is celebrated in Pakistan Punjab and in Indian Punjab. [15] Date [ edit ]Historically in India, Lohri parties were only for sons who got married, or to celebrate the birth of sons. Today, fortunately, things have modernized. In the West, the Indian Diaspora has adopted the practice of throwing Lohri parties for any child who gets married, and any grandchild who has been born (regardless of if they are male or female). Hooray for progressivism! When my mother-in-law was a child in India, kids would go house to house with a bag on the day of Lohri, and people would give them popcorn, sesame sweets, and money– almost like Halloween in the U.S.. The families who give out the treats are the ones in which there has been a birth or marriage of a son in the last year. The festival is celebrated by lighting bonfires, eating festive food, dancing and collecting gifts. In houses that have recently had a marriage or childbirth, Lohri celebrations will reach a higher pitch of excitement. Most North Indians usually have private Lohri celebrations, in their houses. Lohri rituals are performed, with the accompaniment of special Lohri songs. [34] Typically, you cover the makki ki roti in ghee and jaggery (essentially butter and sugar) before spooning some saag into the middle. You eat it almost like a sweet-and-savory taco. (It’s my Punjabi mother-in-law’s favorite dish!)

This song is so recognizable to people in the know that you might see guests yelling “hoya!” during the refrain. Most likely, someone will perform to this song. If you are Western or not familiar with the culture, there’s absolutely no expectation that you would dress in the native garb– but you are welcome to if you have some or know an Indian friend who can help you out! For those who are new to this kind of clothing, dressing up can be really fun! Daniyal, Shoaib. "Lohri legends: the tale of Abdullah Khan 'Dullah' Bhatti, the Punjabi who led a revolt against Akbar" . Retrieved 12 January 2017. Nothing says thoughtful like a personalised gift. Consider custom-made Lohri-themed items like engraved wooden chopping boards, personalised photo frames, or customised family name plates and prints. For a touch of tradition, gift Lohri-themed attire such as a colourful Patiala suit for women or a stylish kurta-pajama set for men. These outfits are perfect for wearing during Lohri celebrations! Each of us has about 40 chances to accomplish our goals in life. I learned this first through agriculture, because all farmers can expect to have about 40 growing seasons, giving them just 40 chances to improve on every harvest.” – Howard Graham Buffett May this harvest festival brings more joy and happiness and your life becomes brighter with the Lohri fire. Happy Lohri!! Lohri is a special occasion for the couple who has just begun their married life or have started a family therefore a gift that can be preserved for a longer duration will be preferred over others.
