This way, the operators should look elsewhere while the spymaster is typing the clue, so they don't see the grid with colored cards. If you are the spymaster, you are trying to think of a one-word clue that relates to some of the words your team is trying to guess. Duet feels more focused and more intense than the original and I find we get a greater sense of satisfaction when winning a game of Duet over being on the winning team in regular Codenames. These tokens are double-sided and act as an in game timer, with each passing turn you’ll be taking one token or the other. Clues are given in the form of one word and a number, where the number represents the number of words on the table that match that clue.However, with any more than six players, I think the original Codenames may be a more entertaining option. Communicating in coded messages, they sneak past enemy assassins in an attempt to complete their mission before time runs out. Once a correct guess is made, the field operatives may continue to make guesses or choose to end their turn voluntarily. Running into an innocent bystander ends the turn immediately, and running into an assassin ends the game.

If an invalid clue is given – the clue is explicitly invalidated by the opposing spymaster – the turn ends immediately and the opposing team gets to randomly reveal one of their own agents. To give all clues from one side before even starting to give clues from the other side is not in the spirit of the game. To give a clue, you just name a word and a number, the word being something that is not already among the visible cards on the table and that helps the others guess which card(s) you refer to, while the number identifies how many words you try to connect with this word (the more the better but also the trickier).
