The nature on our doorstep so often goes unobserved but contains wonders, Jay discovers. “What takes years to grow takes second to crush,” we are told. It is a reminder that every acorn, tree and dandelion is a world in itself and a sacred part of our own. The moment one fathoms this, it seems nothing less than an elemental sacrilege not to go through our days — these alms from chance — in a state of perpetual ecstasy over every living thing we encounter, not to reverence every oak and every owl and every leaf of grass as a living benediction.

The spells are even better and I love the fact that it says explicitly ‘this is a book of spells to be spoken aloud’. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful and we will be getting behind it in a big way,” he said. We want to enchant people with the utter wonder of what a bird is and does. People talk about birdbrains but you think, ‘Oh. My God… I wish’. Humans are so full of their cleverness but imagine being able to navigate by scent or the stars.” Wonderful activities and ideas celebrating the magic of nature and language which can be used standalone or consecutively as a cross-curricular scheme of work in English, Science, Art, PSHE and to support research skills. Each section takes one of the animals or items from nature featured in each spell, and invites children to Seek, Find, Speak, Write and/or Create their response with extracts and illustrations from the book to support and inspire learning: Allein die wunderschönen Aquarelle machen diese Bücher schon lohnenswert , zudem bekommt der Leser hier wirklich tolle Naturimpressionen. It’s educational; it’s a book we should give to our children and to our adults to help them see the sense of wonder that is outside, and its captured perfectly though the power of words and the beautiful illustrations.

If Thomas Bewick was here now…

The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices is curated by The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, which marks its 5 th anniversary in 2022. The Sill hosts a range of exhibitions, programmes and events designed to connect people with the landscape, and is the gateway through which people can explore the unique and special landscape of Northumberland National Park. Robert Macfarlane, who began The Lost Spells when he jotted down some lines about goldfinches while watching over his dying grandmother, said he hoped that it would inspire wonder, hope, action and change. “And that it might run wild in ways we cannot yet imagine, becoming songs, plays, protests, films and more. And that it might touch readers’ hearts a little in this hard autumn.”

The group have announced they will turn The Lost Spells into another album and they hope to tour the new music next year. A fun, wild and boisterous adventure full of paw-tapping music and dancing, played live on-stage by talented actor-musicians, The Lost Spells is a riot of colour and a new Alice in Wonderland, celebrating the magic, power and wonder of nature that could be just outside your window. A century after the great nature writer Henry Beston insisted that we need “a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals,” observing how “in a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear,” Macfarlane and Morris bring us the mystery and wisdom of wild things as complementary and consolatory to our tame incompleteness. Casting Style - Purely cosmetic, changes the casting animation when using the spell. Has an unique "Roar" option. A scroll containing instructions on how to use the Lost Spell called Surge. The spell description reads: "Surge - Hold to release a large, constant stream of your magic, dealing repeated damage at medium range".Amy-Jane Beer, a writer and naturalist who led a successful campaign to get The Lost Words into more than 600 schools in north and east Yorkshire, said the book conveyed the “profound wild magic” of the natural world to children and adults. As some of you may know, I'm an illustrator myself, and one of my favorite things to illustrate is wildlife, nature and landscapes. The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices opens at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre in Northumberland on Saturday 23 July 2022 and runs until 4 June 2023.

The group have announced they will turn The Lost Spells into another album and they hope to tour the new music next year. The album was inspired byand became the musical companion piece to, the bestselling, prize-winning, and much-loved book The Lost Words, and the Spell Songs ensemble went on to perform sell out concerts at iconic venues aroudn the UK. Praise for The Lost Words: Spell Songs We’re excited to present The Lost Spells exhibition and host it here in Northumberland, where we have the opportunity to galvanise people’s support to conserve and protect the natural world.” Her portrayal of a 12 year old who is struggling to understand her place in society was believable and relatable. Writer, Robert Macfarlane, said: “The fabulously varied landscapes of the North East are close to my heart – from coast to moor, forest to hill-top – so it’s a joy to see our book The Lost Spells at the centre of this brilliantly curated and original exhibition at The Sill. I hope that it will help visitors young and old to listen afresh to nature’s wild wonders, and to tune in to the lives, songs and voices of the creatures and plants with whom we share the world.”Puffin started out as a non-fiction publisher, with its first title appearing in 1940. Crowd-funded campaigns resulted in the book being bought and donated to more than three-quarters of primary schools in England, Wales and Scotland and to every hospice in the country. Have you ever danced a folk waltz? With someone who knows how? Floating, flying, fleeting—fantastic. Opening The Lost Spells is like stepping into a room of flannel-clad strangers who dance like gods. It is a book of what was once called poetry: words that conjure meaning through our ears’ encounter with their sounds. These new “spells to be spoken aloud,” urge us to wonder at real, half-forgotten things, like egrets and oaks, swifts and silver birches, and the sound of spoken rhymes. They invite us to stray into a fading world that is steeped in the spirituality of physical experience. Nature is so big and spectacular and deeply magical and The Lost Words delivered that to children in a way that’s not magic dust and wands,” she said. “So much educational material for children is a bit boring or dumbed-down and this just gave them permission for their imaginations to run wild.” A scroll containing instructions on how to use the Lost Spell called Javelin. The spell description reads: "Javelin - Form a javelin of your magic and throw it at the target, embedding it in them and causing it to explode several times." Capturing the imagination of folk music's finest, ...gently reflective collection of original songs"TheFolk by the Oak festival team, proud commissioners of Spell Songs, were thrilled with the release of this wonderfully inventive, dazzlingly beautiful bookand the opportunity to create new music with the Spell Songs Ensemble! Teachers were inspired to draw up free teaching resources for The Lost Words and Morris said one of her favourite stories came from a school where children in an “eco club” used to hide their badges, but since reading the book had worn them with pride. “I guess it gave them courage to believe and to love the wild,” said Morris. As well as being a celebration of their spellbinding work, this new exhibition is a chance for visitors to learn more about Britain’s native species, many of which can be found in Northumberland National Park, and how together we can protect them for future generations to enjoy. Enchanting literally means "to put under a spell." Now I'm sure you can see why I think "The Lost SPELLS" is utterly enchanting!
