Description

You will need to taste the rice to ensure it’s perfectly cooked (I know, I know, what an inconvenience!😉). And it will still be a bit liquidy which is exactly what you want – because now we’re going to cover and rest it off the heat, during which time the excess liquid will be absorbed, leaving you with a bit pot of juicy paella rice, ready for serving! Arborio rice is an Italian alternative to paella rice. This short-grain rice was named after the town where it was first grown, Arborio. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, paella is one of those dishes that can easily take a bad turn if you misstep during the cooking process.

Saffron– a signature part of paella is the warm yellow tinge of the rice and delicate saffron flavour. Saffron is expensive, even more expensive than gold by weight! So if your budget won’t stretch to real saffron threads, use a pinch of saffron powder (it’s artificial but will provide the same colour hit and some flavour – but don’t worry, we have tons of other flavour in this paella!);

Food for Thought

The beauty of this traditional Spanish dish is that there are several alternatives that you can use without the fear of making a faulty paella. The rice used in Paella is actually called Bomba or Valencia rice. So Paella rice is Bomba rice, or short-grained rice native to Spain that has a high starch content with a slightly crunchy texture. Adjust Cooking Time: Basmati rice cooks faster than traditional paella rice, so you’ll need to reduce the cooking time. Depending on the variety and brand, Basmati rice generally cooks in about 10-15 minutes. Now that you have learned the art behind the perfect rice, and you have informed yourself on what not to do when making paella, it’s time to get cooking. Please note that brown rice still possesses its hard outer shell, or bran and therefore will take longer to cook. 7. Parboiled Rice

Not sure where to find a paella pan? You can easily find one on Amigofoods at a great price! Can You Use Basmati Rice for Paella? Basmati Rice If you want the closest experience to authentic paella, using Bomba or Calasparra rice is recommended. These two varieties have the ability to absorb flavors and create the characteristic socarrat at the bottom of the pan. Adjust Cooking Time: Calrose rice cooks faster than some other rice varieties like Bomba rice but slightly slower than short grain rice. Depending on the brand and variety, Calrose rice generally cooks in about 15-20 minutes. The practice soon spread to eastern Spain's Levante region (including the modern-day Valencian Community). This is the area that's most strongly associated with Spanish rice cultivation today.In conclusion, when it comes to substituting rice for paella, you have several options depending on what you have available. If you don’t have access to traditional paella rice varieties like Bomba, Calasparra, or Arborio, you can use alternatives like short grain rice or jasmine rice. Just remember that you may need to make some adjustments to the cooking process.
