That takes us from the series' inception in 1987 right up to MGS3 in 2004, with room for a Master Collection Volume 2 to expand beyond that.

We get the PS1 classic MGS, with the VR missions pack included, we get MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Snake Eater, with enhancements from the later Substance and Subsistence versions. The digital packaging surrounding the three classics doesn't quite feel like the labour of love it should do, but once you sink into the PS1 original, Sons of Liberty, or Snake Eater, it's abundantly clear there's still nothing quite like Metal Gear Solid.Volume 1 line-up features the original titles and beginning of the METAL GEAR series, including the original versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (which also includes VR Missions/Special Missions), and the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

If you already own the PS4™ version of this game, you can get the PS5® digital version at no extra cost and you do not need to purchase this product. So I believe this has MGS 1-3, the MSX metal gears, the two NES ones, but I also wanted to ask if it has the VR missions game? Spread across five separate apps on PS5, it can be a challenge to locate the specific version or the bonus feature you need. This collection includes the classic versions of the games, complete with only minimal edits to copyrighted contents. In MGS2 we get lurches into the low 20s on first meeting Fortune, for example, and 18fps in long shots of the oil rig. It's a basic emulated effort for the PS1 Metal Gear Solid, while MGS2 and 3 are based on the aging HD Collection with 720p fixed in place. Running the PC version with a 4K mod, and forcing 16x anisotropic filtering, offers a significant improvement over the game's default 720p presentation. Still it begs the question: how far off the mark is Switch from hitting 60fps on a game that's fundamentally over 20 years old?

On the other hand, Nintendo Switch leaves all these edges entirely raw without any AA whatsoever, creating heavy visual noise and flickering, especially in motion. The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection bundles together three of the greatest games ever made, but does so in a convoluted manner. The biggest offence of all is each app takes up its own slot on your PS5 Profile page, meaning you'll get a long, ugly list of "Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. Also, sound emulation is sadly inaccurate in this Master Collection release, with a crackling effect kicking in at points - a common problem with PS1 reverb emulation.

There are no extra bells or whistles to be found in the new Master Collection; the three games are as they were either 25 years ago or following the PS3 remasters from Bluepoint Games — save for a small resolution bump.

This collection has fixed many issues present in the HD Collection versions, so it's easily the best modern way to play these titles (PS2 versions win out slightly when it comes to a few bonus features, but in terms of the core titles, they're at their best here. Thankfully, this becomes a non-issue once you actually boot up and get started with one of the three main games. Nvidia, AMD and Intel's graphics control panels let us override the game's AF setting, bumping it to 16x instead for example.
