A lot of the surface grime will come up immediately with this but I did find that the more stubborn areas of ground-in dirt and paint took a little longer. So this is how I did it. Thankfully one of my lovely followers messaged me and told me about a product that she’d used herself to restore and clean up old Victorian tiles in her own home. I figured I’d give it a try knowing that if I couldn’t clean these up and they didn’t look good afterwards, I still had the option of covering them with a different tile. Basically I had nothing to lose trying to restore them to their former glory. How long does Lithofin KF Tile Restorer take to dry? The drying time will depend on the temperature and humidity of the room, as well as the level of ventilation. Generally, Lithofin KF Tile Restorer will dry within a few hours. Avoid walking on the surface until it is completely dry.

What You’ll Need to Restore Victorian Tiles

Scrub the area well with the tile restorer and leave to set for a few minutes. Use the sponge cloth dunked in the clean water, ring out to remove the excess water and wipe the area to remove the top layer of grime. Lithofin KF Tile Restorer is applied either neat or diluted in water up to 1:10, depending on degree of soiling. Spread with a brush or pad, and leave it to work for about 10 to 20 minutes, and scrub if necessary. Do not let the solution start to dry. Then mop up with clean, clear water to remove product and rinse again.

Now I’ll just start by saying while the product works really well, it does entail a little bit of elbow grease. For this small area, I would say it probably took me around 30-40 minutes which is fine when you’re dealing with only a small group of tiles in a hearth but you will probably need to set aside a lot more time for this if, for instance, you are dealing with a hallway or large room of original Victorian tiles. However, it may not be able to remove all types of stains, particularly if they are deeply ingrained. Always test the product on a small, inconspicuous area before use to ensure that it is suitable for your needs. One or more scrubbing sponges (these were fine for a small job but if you’ve got a larger area to cover, I’d recommend heavy-duty scrubbing brushes instead) Tip the bottle directly onto your scrubbing sponge (or a small amount on the tiles if you are using the scrubbing brushes) and start working the liquid into a small patch of tiles at a time. I found it was best to concentrate on only two or three tiles at a time and work my way around.
