Once we've reviewed your details, we'll send you a tailored quote. Where applicable, this will include an energy supply contract offer. What counts as high, medium and low is based on average consumption. But you can set them yourself, if you’d prefer. If your in-home display isn’t showing your energy consumption, there is likely an issue with its connection to the smart meter. Follow the following steps to reset the monitor and fix the connection issue: Accessible smart meters have all the features of a standard smart meter, but also include the following functions:

And worryingly, although two in five reported problems with smart meters actually relate to the IDH not working, you may well have to foot the bill for a repair or replacement yourself if you need one. If your electricity or gas meter is difficult to get at, tell your energy company before it comes to install your smart meters so it's prepared. For example if you meter is Some people may question how often they will actually look at their in-home display. It could well be ignored once the novelty has worn off. However, some energy suppliers are integrating the data into online accounts and apps. Ovo Energy, for example, shows customers how much they’ve spent on refrigeration, heating, wi-fi etc, when they log into their account, which could prove very useful.Hint: Under the ‘History’ section you can choose a time period (for example a specific day) and see when you used the most energy, and how much this might have cost. So you could see how much energy you use when you run the washing machine for an hour and make lunch. If you have a first-generation British Gas smart meter (SMETS1), it may lose its network connection if you switch to a different supplier. This means that your smart meter will lose its smart functionally and work like a traditional standard meter. In this case, you would need to submit your meter readings manually. When you get in touch with your supplier to report a faulty meter, they may ask you to take daily meter readings for seven days. This will give them a good idea of how your meter is performing. They will probably then send an engineer to your home to repair or replace the device. How do you calculate energy consumption? Your energy meter is connected to your gas and electricity supply via a network of cables. These power the meter and allow it to measure the gas and electricity you consume in your property. Over the years, the design of energy meters has evolved. Different manufacturers and suppliers have also used different types of meters at different points. What’s more, some energy meters are designed for single rate tariffs and some for dual-rate tariffs. As a result, not all energy meters look the same. Knowing your energy meter will help you get an accurate reading and stay on top of your energy consumption.

You may also be able to access your energy monitor display on your computer or smart phone, including viewing analysis charts.

What are smart meters?

When you set a budget on your smart energy monitor, you’re setting a target for how much you want to spend today, this week, or this month. If you do lose your meter's smart functions, it will still record the energy you're using. But it won't be able to send this to your energy supplier so you'll have to send meter readings again. But we’ve heard from customers experiencing issues. Monitors aren’t updated with their latest tariff information; they frequently lose connection with the smart meter, or they just don't work at all.

The light on your monitor changes colour depending on how much energy you’re using right now. Green means it’s low, amber shows it’s medium and red shows it’s high.If when you signed up for a gas smart meter you opted for half-hourly or daily meter readings, you can use your in-home display to work out how much it costs to run a gas appliance. To do this, take a note of your running total of gas, then again 24 hours later, and work out the difference. Ideally, you should only run one gas appliance at a time during that 24 hours to give an accurate result for that appliance. Troubleshooting issues with in-home displays The code also ensures companies will properly explain how the smart meters work, and outline how households can use the data available to them to improve their energy efficiency. Do I have to have a smart meter? If your smart meter has also stopped working this can affect your monitor too. For example if a new provider can't read your smart meters, it might not be able to update pricing information shown by your smart meter monitor either. Bringing Britain's energy system into the 21st century - smart meters are part of the effort to create a smart grid, which is part of providing low-carbon, efficient and reliable energy to Britain's households. If you don’t have a smart meter, you’ll have to take manual meter readings and send them to your supplier. This allows your energy company to ensure your bill is accurate.

But there are around four million smart meters still waiting to be connected. 500,000 of them may be impossible to connect and need replacing. If you have a smart gas meter you can use your energy monitor to assess how much things like your gas central heating or gas oven cost to run. However, it’s a bit more complicated than with an electricity energy monitor because the display isn’t updated in real time. Wait seven days after you first spot that your energy use isn’t appearing – according to British Gas, most monitors restart automatically within a week.Scottish Power said: "Faults with in-home displays are rare. Loss of connectivity, however, is not uncommon and is typically resolved by signalling the smart metering system, something we do irrespective of the age of the IHD. We are able to verify remotely if a smart meter is functioning correctly and if so, we work to reconnect an in-home display to avoid the need to replace a device which is capable of functioning correctly." This was the most common problem experienced in the past 12 months by those with smart meters in our survey. Two in five said their supplier hadn’t received their smart meter readings. There’s also been a few horror stories about smart meters with faulty meters billing customers tens of thousands of pounds for a day’s use. But this is extremely rare and has been remedied with the upgrade to SMETS2 meters.
