The 2nd story is The Second Murder at the Vicarage by Val McDermid, narrated by Adrian Scarborough.

Marple: Twelve New Mysteries is an anthology that comprises twelve short stories, featuring Dame Agatha Christie’s Miss Jane Marple, the much-loved detective, and written by contemporary crime-fiction writers. Varied in approach and setting (including the fictional village of St. Mary Mead, London, the Amalfi Coast, Asia and the United States), this is a mixed bag as is most anthologies. While I did enjoy the collection as a whole, a few of the stories were particularly noteworthy: There is no family history to say whether Hugh Lane and Margaret Cochran knew each other when they were at The Albert Schools as young children. There was only one year difference in their ages, and as it was not a huge school with many hundreds of children, they surely must have been aware of each other at least. Hugh’s family did not attend the Congregational church, or go to the Sunday School at The Albert Schools, so they would have moved in different circles outside of school. It is not until some eight years or so after leaving school, in about 1930 that they were to meet up again as members of Marple Tennis Club. The minister of the church, the Rev. George Phillips, M.A, B.D., also expressed the hope that the new queen would have a year that would leave happy memories for her after life and that she would have opportunities of serving the church as never before. He congratulated the workers upon a highly creditable performance. There have been many adaptations of the Agatha Christie stories, on both the big screen and the small, but if you want to see how Ms. Christie envisioned her beloved character, tune into the BBC television series, “Miss Marple”. As with all short story collections, some resonated more than others, and I am not going to rate them all individually but there are a few standouts that I DO want to mention, as they were my personal favorites!Miss L. Hodson was the secretary for the gala, Miss K, Hodson was the pianist for the rehearsals and accompanied the dancing. Other members of the committee were Mrs. Vernon and Miss H. Cochrane. The primary school teachers, who prepared the younger children for the Rosebud crowning were: Misses M. Forde, A. Simpson, N. Griffiths, and C. Nightingale. Mrs. Cochrane and Mrs. Faulkner, with a staff of helpers, made the tea arrangements. The decoration of the schoolroom was in the hands of the young ladies' class. UK Great Britain, Ordnance Survey One-Inch Seventh Series (1:63,360), 1955-1961 Parish History The Imperial Gazetteer of England & Wales 1870 Rene received a great ovation and looked queenly with a befitting modest grace. Her gown was oyster crepe suede satin and lace and had a blue velvet train and white ermine collar. Pink roses formed her bouquet.

The 3rd story is Miss Marple Takes Manhattan by Alyssa Cole, narrated by Adjoin Andoh. This one might just be my favorite. I really didn't expect to like it, as it was hard to imagine Miss Marple in Manhattan, but the dry humor was marvelous! Here are my favorite quotes: Mary? Murdered? There must be some mistake, Jane. What motive could anyone have for murdering Mary? It's not as if she's got the brains to be a threat to anyone. Or enough personality to provoke a murderous thought.' The first story had the supremely clichéd line “Miss Marple let out the breath she had not realised she had been holding” and it was pretty much all downhill from there. You could be forgiven for thinking that Roman Lakes must have been Marple's most popular destination but, surprisingly, this was not the case. This was achieved by one of our present-day local pubs with quite an amazing history.Alderman was educated at South Hampstead High School and Lincoln College, Oxford where she read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. She then went on to study creative writing at the University of East Anglia before becoming a novelist. How about by putting together a collection of TWELVE original stories, penned by TWELVE of today’s most impressive, popular, best-selling authors? Her father is Geoffrey Alderman, an academic who has specialised in Anglo-Jewish history. She and her father were interviewed in The Sunday Times "Relative Values" feature on 11 February 2007.[2] Prizes for costumes in the procession were awarded on the adjudication of Mr. Phillips to the following: Ladies: 1, Miss M. Hoole (cruising girl); 2. Doreen Heyward (gipsy). Gents.: 1, R. Phillips and H. Wilde. (Darby and Joan); 2, K. Bryant (harlequin). The Rosebuds procession, on a smaller scale, was as charming as that of the older girls. Dorothy Priest, chosen by the primary scholars, was the Rosebud in succession to Betty Andrew.

The draw made my mind up about a few things - although it was the night before that I really felt we were in with a chance of victory,” Garry recalls. No band bus He adds: “We had a great mix of youth and experience such as Helen Fox on principal cornet and Peter Reid on bumper-up. John Maines was on trombone and Kevin Wadsworth on solo horn. My maternal grandparents, Andrew Cochran and his wife Mary, continued to play a large part in the Hibbert Lane Congregational Church. Apart from attending the church, being on committees, and attending events at The Albert Schools, Andrew was also the church secretary for many years during the 1920s and 1930s. I appreciate very greatly the honour conferred upon me and value so much more the opportunity that it affords me to do my best in the service of the Sunday school and Endeavour. My father, John, came from Bradford in Manchester and met my Mother, Mary, at the Roman Lakes. John and his mate Harry rented a wooden hut on a farm in Marple Bridge. The Roman Lakes has had a big impact on our lives, as you will see later on. The Open Mind by Naomi Alderman - Miss Marple gets invited to an Oxford dinner where she meets a particularly obnoxious scholar. This was just a bit bland overall, and not helped by my dislike of books about academia. The mystery elements felt a bit pointless. 2/5. The crowning took place on the platform in the large room upstairs and country dances were performed in the small space left in the midst of a large audience. It was to the credit of the stage management that everything went off so well in such a confined space.

Then followed a clever display of folk dancing by the maids of honour on the green before the throne; and Sheila Wilcox gave a graceful exposition of classic dancing. Marple Congregational Sunday School's Rose Queen crowning in the grounds of Rose Hill House, was bathed in sunshine on Saturday afternoon. Miss Elsie Harrison, the popular choice of the Sunday school for the crown during 1934, went through the coronation ceremony with charm and dignity. In October 2020 a gentleman called Dave Watson sent me some photos that featured his mother, Joan Hope, as a young girl and also a couple of newspaper cuttings. The subjects were a 1934 pantomime at the Albert Schools and two Rose Queen events held at the Albert Schools and Rose Hill House in 1934-35. The photos have been added to the Virtual History Tour and when I read the newspaper cuttings I realised that they crossed over the stories of several similar photos already on the Tour. So I decided to scan the newspaper text as I thought it could make an interesting history article. One thing I love about these newspaper reports is that they mention so many names - perhaps your parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents are mention too?Miss Rene Rowbotham was crowned Rose Queen for 1935 at the Albert School, Marple, on Saturday 6th July.
