Thinking of buying the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach? Read our in-depth review of this vacuum cleaner to learn more about its strengths and weaknesses. READ NEXT: The best Dyson vacuum cleaners Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist Cordless Vacuum Cleaner review: What’s it like to use?

I used my water-lift meter and anemometer to measure the vacuum’s power in AirWatts. I measured this cleaner at 155.34AW, placing it firmly in the mid-range. Spend more on a vacuum such as the Shark AX950UKT, and you’ll get more than 200AW. However, the battery performed well in its Turbo mode, delivering 13 mins 15 secs of cleaning before giving out. The other saving grace is that the battery takes only 2.5 hours to fully recharge, which is significantly faster than most rivals. Our biggest issue is the hose attachment. Every time you want to use it, you have to detach it from where it’s stored, clip it to the airflow, and then add the tool you want. It’s frustratingly inconvenient and inefficient. Filtration Undo the 2 screws found at the rear next to the wheels using a standard Phillips screwdriver. On some models it will be necessary to remove 4 screws fitted as shown by the blue arrows belowThe Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is one of the cheaper upright vacuum cleaners. But does it offer value for money? For better all-round cleaning performance, the Shark IZ300UKT proved stronger in our tests. This has a soft roller for hard floors and can fold up for compact storage. It also comes with a greater number of tools and attachments, although it’s usually a bit more expensive, too. Note that this model can’t stand unsupported when extended, though, so you’ll always need to find somewhere to prop it up mid-clean. As a plug-in model, cleaning reach is important, and the H-Upright 500 Plus provides up to 15 metres, thanks to the long power cable, hose and the extendable crevice tool (this is 36cm long and has a further extension tube to take it to 76cm). The net result is that whether you’re cleaning down low or up high, reach won’t be a problem with this cleaner; you’ll rarely need to lift its full 6.5kg bulk.

You get a couple of accessories with the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach. The long crevice tool is good to see, as most recent vacuums have a shorter version that’s much less useful. Lastly, if you've tried all of the above and you're still experiencing a loss of suction, it's probably due to the motor. Now you can replace the motor, it's not the easiest of jobs but it's certainly doable and you may find that you don't need to replace the whole motor, just the carbon brushes in the motor. This pet brush has a motorised bristle bar, which is far more effective at lifting embedded pet hair from sofas, stairs and car interiors. The Hoover H-Upright 500 Sensor Plus has a 11m cord, which means you can travel quite a way around your home before you need to stop and re-plug. A 4.5m hose also allows it the stretch it needs to clean up to 13 stairs at a time - this means you can leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs rather than having to balance the cleaner on each step. The accessories are your best bet for stairs as the main floorhead is too wide. The 2-in-1 brush is good for the edges, but the angle of the brush means it’s not overly ergonomic.Good performance, an Automatic mode and neat onboard storage help make this a decent vacuum cleaner – but attaching the hose to use the accessories is super-fiddly. Hoover H-Upright 500 Plus design and features – Excellent storage and easy to use, but the hose is fiddly Starting with the Cheerios, the HF500 performed well. There are vents at the front of the floor head – gaps that can draw in and swallow larger items, such as chunky breakfast cereal. We test each corded vacuum multiple times on carpet, laminate and floorboards. To assess performance, we cover each surface with dust and calculate the percentage the vacuum removes. We repeat this with an assortment of debris, including biscuit crumbs and pet hair. All the tests are repeated in handheld mode. We test both modes in a variety of other cleaning scenarios, such as on stairs or in a car, and consider how easy it is to use.

Hoover has included onboard storage for all the accessories, so they’re easy to access mid-clean. They can also be used with the hose, but they don’t fit very well and can fall off. It’s generally a fiddly and time-consuming job to swap the attachments around, which we think is disappointing. Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach Suction Power and Cleaning Performance Hard floors aren’t a strong point for the 500 Reach. It struggles on most hard surfaces and is close to useless at getting dust out of gaps between floorboards. As you can see from the chart below, the Hoover HF500 more or less holds its own in terms of suction power. However, it’s worth noting that the vacuum only has two power settings, where some rivals have three. For example, the Shark IZ300UKT has a standard power setting whose suction sits between its weakest and most powerful settings, designed for everyday cleaning. The HF500 has only standard and Turbo modes, so its standard suction is only a little better than the Shark model’s lightest, most economical setting. The 1.5 litre capacity of the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is around average, but still larger than the Shark NZ801UKT. It’s enough dust bin capacity to cover a good amount of ground without frequent emptying.

This stops the brushes from spinning when the vac is stationary, which prevents scuffs. There’s a large 1.5-litre bin that easily unclips from the body. Push the eject button at the bottom and a flap flips open so you can tip out the contents. If you’ve collected a fair bit of fluff and hair then you may need to open the top flap, pull out the cone and give it all a good shake. At 0.45l, the collection bin is relatively compact for a full-size cordless, so you can be pretty certain that it will need emptying at the end of most significant cleaning jobs. Aside from its wide cleaning radius and option to turn off the brush bar, we don’t think the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is a user-friendly vacuum cleaner.
