Gaming in particular felt fast and responsive – we never experienced any lag or glitches, even when playing demanding games like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG Mobile at top settings.

The main 12MP sensor takes some really great snaps, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as it’s a camera we’ve seen multiple times before and been impressed with on each occasion. Samsung remains the king when it comes to colour-rich, deeply saturated and slightly oversharpened shots and those traits are clear to see here. These images are primed for social media and I can completely understand why they’re so popular.

FAQs

Since the Galaxy S20 FE’s main sensor is identical to the one found on the normal Galaxy S20, image quality in most situations remains practically unchanged. This means that the S20 FE shares its sibling’s shortcomings, most notably with occasionally artificial-looking colours and drab night shots compared to the same images taken on the iPhone 11 In our battery rundown test, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE lasted for 20hrs 39mins before battery levels dropped to zero, which is 11% longer when compared against the Galaxy S20’s FHD+ score and a whopping 30% longer than the Note 20 Ultra. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE review: Cameras The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE has a 6.5-inch screen, bigger than the 6.2-inch display on the Galaxy S20, but smaller than the 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch screens on the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra. This display is broken up by a ‘punch-hole’ cut-out in the top-center – it’s pretty small, and so doesn’t steal much screen space. The 120Hz refresh rate is here though, which the display updates 120 times per second, so twice as fast as the 60Hz ‘standard’ of many other smartphones (including the Note 20). A higher refresh rate makes motion look smoother, whether you’re playing games or swiping through menus, although depending on what you’re doing you won’t necessarily notice the difference. It’s worth pointing out that 120Hz is the maximum setting, and you can drop down to 60Hz in the settings if you want to save on battery life. There are a few different power-saving modes that you can enable, each of which turns off certain features, and if you buy the Galaxy S20 FE we’d recommend that you experiment with these if you want to max-out your battery life.

However, on our web surfing battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Galaxy S20 FE lasted only 8 hours and 58 minutes over AT&T's 5G network and 9:03 on Verizon's LTE network. (I don't have Verizon 5G in New Jersey). The handsets on our best phone battery life list all last 11 hours or more. It’s not just large, it’s also a technically capable display. In our tests, the Galaxy S20 FE’s panel covered 93% of the sRGB colour gamut, with a total coverage of 97% in the phone’s ‘Natural’ display setting. On a general note, colours looked as they should, with only a few inconsistencies with some dark red, brown and green tones. An average Delta E (colour accuracy) of 2.01 is better than the 2.64 of the regular S20, too. Another S-series staple, AKG-tuned stereo speakers with Dolby audio technology is available as well. Many have complained about the decreased performance and battery skills of the Exynos version vs the Qualcomm so it’s great to see Samsung deciding to give a wider launch to the arguably superior model.

Now, if you do go for the cheaper 4G version then you will get the Samsung Exynos 990. This variation won’t be available in the States. Paired with that chipset you’ve got 6GB of fast RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage. This model features an in-display fingerprint reader that can be used to secure Samsung Pay. Speaking of which, the Samsung-exclusive MST feature (which works with terminals that don’t support NFC) is available Yes, it is dual-sim ready. This means you can use the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE for both your business and personal phone numbers, switching between the two on the single device. Outside of the difference in network speed, the Galaxy S20 FE shares the same specs - the now-unified Snapdragon 865 processor, a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED with 120Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution, triple camera (0.5x-1x-3x), 4,500mAh battery, microSD card slot and IP68 rating.Moving on, three more things have changed from the original S20 models: the screen, the camera and the battery. Let’s look at the screen first. Proximity Sensor, Hall Effect Sensor, Light Sensor, Gyroscope Sensor, Accelerometer (G-Sensor), Magnetometer, Fingerprint Sensor Samsung sent us the 5G variant of the S20 FE for this review, which means we can finally judge whether or not non-UK Samsung owners have been getting the better end of the deal until now. Unless you don't care about software suport for the future and you just want a decent device for light gaming and content consumption (oh yes, everything watched on this phone looks and sounds great). This doesn’t mean much when it comes to real-world performance, though. I’ve been using a Note 20 Ultra (with an Exynos 990) as my daily driver for the last month or so and I haven’t noticed any performance issues. Both phones are blisteringly fast to boot-up, whizz across the user interface without any stuttering (even at 120Hz) and neither grinds to a halt when running CPU-heavy applications such as Adobe Lightroom and Xbox Game Pass.

Samsung’s year of phone releases doesn’t seem to be slowing down, with the South Korean brand finally unveiling the much leaked Galaxy S20 FE. Up until now there was a Snapdragon 865-powered Galaxy S20 FE with 5G thanks to the Qualcomm X55 modem and an Exynos 990-powered Galaxy S20 that tops out at 4G and was also cheaper. One of the true highlights of the Galaxy S20 FE is that the UK 5G version comes with the Snapdragon 865 platform, rather than the usual Exynos chipset you’ll find in the high-end Note 20 series and Galaxy S20. Features like the 120Hz display, 5G connectivity and always-on display are all battery hogs, and particularly when used together they can dramatically reduce how long the phone lasts between charges. When these were enabled, on a typical day we’d finish work with around 30% battery or less remaining, and we’d always have to charge the phone to make it through the evening if we wanted to play a game or watch Netflix.Flipping between focal lengths is easy and the S20 FE takes good snaps at both ultra wide and 3x zoom. Neither of these are of the same quality as the main sensor and the results can be soft, especially when zooming, but they offer a nice bit of versatility. It’s also good to see Samsung not cramming in another sensor for the sake of it, some other brands offering cheaper Android phones should take note… The Night mode here is particularly useful, as it utilizes the main camera’s large sensor to take in lots of light in low-light settings. It’s pretty easy to use, as you don’t have to hold the phone still for too long, as some night modes require you to do, and the resulting pictures are pretty well-lit.
