Description

This book depicts the hazards of attempting to find enduring love and friendship in Africa's wildest metropolis with humour, wisdom, and empathy that will prove universal and informative. There were men afraid of commitment, power thirsty ones, egoistic, and all collectively felt like Kings that deserved to objectify women, use them as tools, have their way; like women were created to dance to their tunes with whatever melody as long as it suited their low desires or gave them that absurd high of being overentitled and unaccountable for their deeds. Kuku delivers right up to the end with a story that seems set apart from the rest of the collection because there isn’t any humor, which carries the bulk of these stories. It starts with a dedication that reads: “To you, and all devoted people inundated by the all-too-familiar phrase ‘Men are scum’.

The dialogue is snappy and filled with witty banter, creating a lively rhythm that keeps the reader hooked. This book underscores with wit, humour, wisdom, and sensitivity the perils of trying to find lasting love and companionship in Africa’s craziest city that will prove universal and illuminating.Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad underscores with wit, humour, wisdom and sensitivity, the perils of trying to find lasting love and companionship in Africa's most notorious city. Anyone who could keep a white shirt clean at the end of the day in Lagos deserved a standing ovation. This book is full of realistic, flesh and blood characters, crass descriptions and understandable motives.

Although set in various parts of Lagos, the part about it being 'men' isn't quite true as the book shows. As usual with short stories, I’m often left dissatisfied as I feel some stories could be explored more but I understood the stories for what they were and tried to enjoy them as such. What is also remarkable about the book is that the stories are not told solely from a female perspective. This to me is madness, that this man seems to get the victim position when they both are secretive and toxic to each other. So grab a copy, sit back, and prepare for a riotous journey through the madcap world of Lagosian men.

It is a result of a culture of convoluted traditional ideals desperately seeking to find a place for itself in the global, "Western" cultural scene. Her debut collection of stories, Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad, became a runaway bestseller in Africa upon its release in 2021, and was named the bestselling fiction title of 2022 in Nigeria, with international editions following in the UK (Swift Press), US (HarperVia) and Germany (Peter Hammer Verlag). So, it is not surprising when a man dates a woman for years, treating her as his one and only, while being secretly married to a woman he respects enough to keep away from his concubine.

Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos. A beautiful, touching and heartbreaking collection short stories, that might ring true for many men in Lagos but are almost all relateable to me as an Indian woman too.

You liked me so much I had no choice but to start liking myself, to start acting respectable, like someone who had something special waiting for them back home. I have to say I really like Damilare's writing style and I definitely can't wait to read more from her in the future. Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos. Meeting him again must have brought back the memory of the seemingly pedophile act that closed her off to having anything to do with him as an adult. We see harrowing tales of betrayals, double-lives and hard truths, as experienced and seemln through the eyes of women who are in turn damaged, lovingly innocent, and vindictive. So, if anyone can collate stories about the madness of the men, there deserves to be one revealing the madness of the women. They are just a reminder of how morally decadent we have allowed ourselves to be; we wallow in a quagmire, splashing mud all around, without first wondering when solid ground became sinking sand. As a result, the very proponents of this culture, the new generation, are trapped in a cycle of hurt, uncontrolled lust and distended emotional capability.
