Given time, you can imagine Gomez pulling the riffs into different shapes or re-appropriating the vocal rhythm for something new entirely, but time is not something the band thought a lot about in those early days. The live tracks are also well worth the additional few quid to upgrade to this reissue, providing generous value for money.

OK Computer was maybe the best distillation of this approach the era saw; then a few short years later Kid A came along and put an end to it. Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary. The fact that his voice doesn't overpower the band's songs is what feels most extraordinary when you look at this album closely.

The band also tour Australia and New Zealand later in the year, and will perform both Bring It On and Liquid Skin in their entirety at both the Auckland and Brisbane shows.

Sensing success, the band released its sophomore set Liquid Skin less than a year and a half after their initial outing. The keyboard and computer effects are deliberately, obnoxiously prominent…for about two-thirds of the record, then it plainly gives up and just goes over to classic rock, which is in fact what the band itself would do for the remainder of its career. We were just writing all the time, we’d be dealing with 24 songs for each record and on another day those songs might have made the record. But of course nobody bought any of Gomez’s albums after In Our Gun who didn’t start with either Bring It On or Liquid Skin.

While the arrangements can be intricate, songs such as the folky 'Revolutionary Kind' use simple repeated guitar hooks as their base, leaving the band to playfully add the colours and texture that defines their sound. Complete with the original line-up fully intact after all this time, they celebrated the 20th anniversary of 'Bring It On' in 2018 by playing it in full on tour and releasing an expanded version of the LP. But it’s easy to feel like it’s 1999 again listening to this specific record, both for its properties as a piece of art itself and my personal memories attached to it. Both of those bands were essentially classicists who did themselves no favors whenever they tried to engage with the trends of their own era.Gomez’s drummer Olly Peacock commented; “ Liquid Skin was the step from the four track and recording in a garage to us accepting – in the most ridiculous way – that we were now doing music professionally. The crunch of electric guitar scattered throughout the background of the track provides a deep contrast with the more melodic tones of the acoustic guitar that’s placed at the forefront of the track. Las Vegas Dealer” builds its 5/4 verses over a more or less unbroken Olly Peacock drum fusillade then flies apart into quiet, piano-driven refrains where the haunting guitars sound recorded from at least two rooms over. Perhaps “We Haven’t Turned Around,” an overblown orchestral power ballad that sounds better in sequence in the middle of the LP than it does by its lonesome, was too ambitious a choice of single.
