Description

Acer palmatum 'Kagiri-nishiki' - a strong but slow growing, variegated acer with beautiful bluish-green leaves which are margined in light pink tones and streaked with white. It has a dainty appearance and will make a lovely addition to any autumn garden as it adds interest in the cooler months. Signs of this can be the plant looking too large for the container as well as devitalised and straggly.

Positioning your Japanese Acer will depend on the variety but most will grow best in a sheltered position. Green-leaved trees will tolerate full sun but some shade in the brightest of conditions will help prevent scorch. Red/Purple leaved trees will need some sun to help their develop their rich colours while variegated leaved trees are more suited to partial shade as they are more susceptible to scorch from the afternoon sun. The leaves are quite delicate and a harsh wind can easily damage the stems and leaf tissue as they get whipped about. Sitting in wet soil for too long can cause issues with the roots and can encourage fungi to develop, which we will cover in the next section. Secondly, these trees are very slow growing. They take years to reach their full height and they won’t overpower any space. We have one of the widest range of trees in the UK, and for those plants which we cannot despatch next day we will normally despatch within 4 weeks. The despatch time for different products will be confirmed when products are added to your shopping basket

They will grow in most soils except very dry, waterlogged or alkaline conditions. A moist yet well-drained, slightly acidic loam rich in organic matter is ideal. Other soils can be enriched with ericaceous compost when planting.

Formative pruning is not required because Japanese Acers naturally form an elegant shape over time. Keep pruning to a minimum, removing only crossed, damaged and badly placed stems to create an open framework.

With this beautiful acer you'll see vibrant shades of red foliage right through until autumn. This tough little tree will grow in small gardens or pots and will only ever grow to a height of around two metres. If it becomes too large this plant is ideal for pruning to keep it smaller. Acers with darker foliage colours (red to purple) can handle a bit more sun than the pale green and yellow varieties. Pot grown Acers are particularly vulnerable to winter frosts. Wrap your containers with fleece or bubble wrap. The compact shape of this bush means it fits in even the tiniest garden spaces. It's amazing foliage changes throughout the seasons. Red tinged young leaves in spring with a dark green colouring and then vibrant shades of gold-yellow in summer. Once autumn rolls around, its leaves change to an amazing deep red before dropping into winter dormancy - perfect for adding some autumnal charm to your small garden.

The plant we send you will already be around two feet tall and very bushy. It will be supplied in a 5-litre pot.

Green Island Gardens

This is nothing to worry about, and there should be an even more colourful display through autumn before the leaves do fall. Japanese Acers can live to over 100 years, so it's worth taking extra care in selecting and planting your tree as it will hopefully be a lifetime investment. Japanese Acer are very prone to leaf scorch in both windy or excessively sunny positions. Red/Purple leaved varieties with green leaves or poor autumn colour may indicate insufficient light levels.

Japanese Maples are small, deciduous trees best known for their elegant, architectural form and stunning autumn foliage colours. They are generally slow growing and come in varying forms such as weeping, upright and spreading. Like all maple trees, Japanese Acers have lobed foliage with veins spreading out like the fingers of a hand. However, the leaves are smaller than traditional maples and many varieties have deeply dissected, almost feathery leaves that might not be immediately recognised as a maple tree. Japanese Acers are native to the hills and forest fringes of Japan, Korea and Mongolia where they grow in the shade of larger trees on woodland fringes, which makes them more shade-tolerant than other deciduous trees. Their natural habitat is out of strong winds, with some light shade and normally a neutral to acidic, moist but free-draining soil. Unfortunately by this stage it is often too late to save the plant, but if caught earlier before the roots decompose then action can be taken to rectify the situation. They are very hardy trees but they will do best in a sheltered aspect. They don’t do well in very strong winds. For red and purple (variegated) varieties a position out of full sun will prevent their foliage from scorching. Overwatering can cause this problem also, but a well draining soil will help to move the water away from the roots. The tree you receive from us will already be five to six feet tall. We’ll ship it to you in a 7.5 litre pot all ready for planting.Acer palmatum dissectum 'Inaba-Shidare' - small, decidous trees grown for their graceful habit, beautiful coloured foliage that is often deeply dissected the Acer is a perfect addition to any garden especially if you're looking to add some autumn interest. Many cultivars are extreemly slow growing, making them perfect for small gardens or grown in pots.
