Description

The game was followed up by two racing game entries, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (2010) and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012).

Sega Superstars (2004, PS2) · Sega Superstars Tennis (2008, multi-platform) · Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (2010, multi-platform) · Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012, multi-platform) Tournament Mode allows the player to play in a series of matches against opponents chosen at random by the computer in an arena also chosen at random. The gameplay in Sega Superstars Tennis is similar to Sega's Virtua Tennis series, with characters able to perform techniques such as lob shots and drop shots. Characters each have different statistics and proficiency in specific areas, such as power or control. Each character also has their own unique "Superstar State", a special ability that can be activated once an accompanying meter is filled. The effects of a Superstar State vary depending on the character; for example, Sonic transforms to Super Sonic and causes the ball to zig-zag when hit, while Gilius summons thunderbolts that can temporarily stun opponents. The game features 10 courts themed after various Sega games, such as Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog and Shibuya Downtown from Jet Set Radio. [3]Pudding: Control type - Her Superstar state, Guitar Showdown, makes her break out her guitar and makes the ball travel in a wide angular rectangle pattern.

This "charge early" control negatively affects the game's more over-the-top arcade element: special shots. As you successfully volley the ball, you're building up your special shot represented by a star below your character's feet. When it's fully illuminated, tapping the shoulder button will activate it and enable your character's over-the-top tennis playing abilities. On the console game, the characters will perform moves that'll throw trash on the court, or teleport the opposition to remote positions. On the Nintendo DS, they're nothing but crazy shots that zig zag and corkscrew, zipping in different locations. Here's the problem: while the ball is whizzing all over the court, since the ball has a pre-determined landing position, players can simply stand in the middle of the court and start charging their swing. 90 percent of the time the player can blindly hit these shots this way, making the reason for these shots pretty much pointless. a b c Geddes, Ryan (March 19, 2008). However, SEGA Superstars Tennis was never released on PC. Sega's many franchises come together for a tennis tournament spanning the varied worlds created by them in the last twenty years. Sixteen characters over fifteen different Sega game series are represented, as are ten different courts based on those same franchises. Likewise, returning serves and keeping rallies going doesn't appear to let you stretch for shots in quite the same way as VT does. Whereas you might reasonably expect your man (slash monkey, slash hedgehog, etc) to stretch and dive to meet the ball, time after time we found ourselves punished for shots that would be considered routine in VT. Whether that's a set-in-stone gameplay decision or something being tweaked and balanced in the final stages of development was hard to say. Right now, though, SEGA Superstar Tennis definitely doesn't feel like Virtua Tennis with SEGA icons instead of grizzled professionals. Sonic the Hedgehog: In this one, the player can free roam on the court and dodge electric spikes thrown by robots and collect as many rings as possible. Several monitor power-ups like Invincibility and Speed Shoes are available. Scullion, Chris (April 2008). "Sega Superstars Tennis Review (Wii)". Official Nintendo Magazine: 70. In fact, the Wii remote controls work pretty well, the selection of characters and courts is sure to please most SEGA fans, and while the volleys aren't nearly as deep or as strategic as they are in Virtua Tennis, they can still be enjoyable, particularly with multiple human players.

The number of missions also varies between the HD version and the Wii version, and the former has more missions than the latter. In addition to that, the HUD of the Wii version is simpler than that displayed on the HD version. Holding aloft its new baby, SEGA proudly stormed the gates of EG towers (we do have towers now - did you see the press release?) to give us a hands-on with a near-complete 360 build of the game, currently looking good for a mid-March release on about 97 platforms. Okay, five: 360, PS3, Wii, DS and (uhuh) PS2. "No PSP or PC?" you cry. "Where's the love?" That's meant to be a tennis joke.

Mario Tennis for its colorful presentation and speedy, responsive controls and Virtua Tennis for its realistic visuals and deep controls, not to mention the strategy that's buried within. And yet, seemingly against all the odds, I don't love SEGA Superstars Tennis and this is because it teeters somewhere in the middle of the two, excelling neither at being an arcade game of tennis nor a simulation. And also because despite all of the colorful mascots featured in the game, it still feels sterile – really short on charm and charisma. a b Bramwell, Tom (March 18, 2008).
