Description

Begin by asking pupils what their favourite lesson in school is. Take a selection of answers and point out how different everyone’s favourite is. Now imagine that you only got to do maths, all day every day, and never got to have a go at doing something different. Would it get boring? Say that we have a 'diverse curriculum', which means learning about lots of different things and having a wide variety of activities. This makes school much more interesting. We also have diversity in the types of people there are in the world - different heights, different hair colour, different likes and dislikes - and that diversity of people and cultures makes life more interesting too. Tell everyone they'll now watch a short video about diversity. I can explore my identity and compare it with those of others, recognising that society is made up of diverse groups, beliefs and viewpoints. (Progression step 2) I can show an awareness of who I am and that I am similar and different to others. (Progression step 1) Children know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions. (Foundation)

Explore strategies for avoiding working with LGBT+ in silos to develop a more intersectional approach For example, if you have a child in school who is trans, consider accessible training or information for the staff team to ensure they are well equipped to create an inclusive environment for that young person. The echinopsis is a cactus, a greenhouse plant. It likes heat and has to be kept completely dry in winter. The flowers can be white, golden-yellow or pink and are sweetly scented. In some species, these open during the evening and last for about two days. Blink and you can end up missing them! This ground-breaking book examines the roots and impact of identity-based prejudice in schools, drawing on Shaun's own experiences of homophobic bullying and his subsequent career as a teacher and school leader. The core of the book is based on Shaun's award-winning training programme Inclusion For All, endorsed by the Department for Education, presenting an effective approach to LGBT+ inclusion at a whole-school level. This includes practical strategies to eradicate prejudice, prevent bullying, embrace diversity and improve whole-school outcomes such as attendance and attainment, as well as mindfulness techniques and ideas for INSET training sessions and school assemblies. Avoid talking to other students about a classmate’s difference, outside of the parameters they are happy with, even if they ask. If the points above are already well covered then it will be quite straightforward to encourage a curious or doubtful youngster to get to know their classmate for themselves.Like the allium, the leucojum is a bulb. It ’s called a snowflake and is a bit like a snowdrop, but with a rounder flower. All six petals are the same size, unlike the snowdrop, whose inner three petals are smaller than the outer three. Imagine a flower bed in a garden. In it grow all the lovely flowers we have been learning about today. How pretty it would look! Written with warmth, humour and compassion, this is a must-read guide for all teachers and school leaders who wish to promote inclusion, celebrate difference and ensure safer futures for all young people.

Some of them may be the same colour, but that ’s about it. Nigella has bushy growth and is good for cutting, with feathery foliage and striking seed pods. This is not a book, it is a philosophy, and one which I wish had been in place when I was growing up. We can only truly celebrate difference when we face prejudice head-on, including our own. - Lord Michael Cashman CBE, Founder of Stonewall

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Celebrating Difference and consider it a very timely book. This text uses a clear structure to move through the personal experiences of the author, through education practice, to a consideration of the issues from a more theoretical view. It situates LGBT+ within the context of inclusive education as well as providing practical approaches to the development of practice in schools. I shall certainly be using this text with both undergraduate education students, as well as student practitioners reading for their Masters in Inclusive Education. As each slide appears, read the list to the children and ask them what the list has in common – why have these items been grouped together? Understand the moral and statutory rationale for LGBT+ inclusion from the beginning of education through to school leavers. A pencil, whiteboard, desk, dictionary, paintbrush and calculator are all items you would find in a school. Now think about your class and each member of it. It is the combination of children with all their differences that makes it such a rich place.Celebrate the differences in all pupils and staff, so that pupils with differences that are less common, such as a disability or a disfigurement, don't feel especially different.
