Select Pressure Cook button (Manual on older models). The default settings will be Normal mode (35 minutes cooking time) on High pressure. If you press the Pressure Cook button again, it will change from Normal mode to Less or More, which simply changes the automatically programmed cooking time. Less would be 20 minutes and More would be 45 minutes. Having said that, you can also adjust time and pressure levels once you’ve selected one of the Smart Program functions. Does high pressure make cooking take longer THAN LOW?

Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure. Learn more about other smart program settings on Instant Pot here. The Instant Pot Duo Plus is a step up from the regular Duo, and those who make recipes like yogurts and desserts will probably appreciate the Plus. It adds in a few extra programs and features over the Duo. With each new model of the Instant Pot, there seem to be more settings and functions but the good thing is that the most common 9-10 settings are always the same. We hope that this guide has cleared up any confusion you might have had about the Smart program buttons. If you press each SMART setting button more than once, it will toggle between Normal, Less or More options, which gives you more control of time, temperature or default pressure. For example, the RICE button can be set to Less or More depending on how soft or firm you like your rice or the type of rice you might be cooking.Sautéing and browning is also an option with the Instant Pot. Instead of getting multiple pots and pans dirty, you can just use one small appliance to cook your entire meal. What is the best thing to cook in instant pot? However, if you’re looking to save space in your kitchen by replacing several gadgets with just one, or you are looking to broaden the repertoire of dishes you cook, without having to research and learn new cooking skills, an Instant Pot will more than prove useful. What's the best size instant pot? The Yogurt button is a non-pressure cooking Smart Program made for easily fermented dairy and non-dairy recipes. The setting modes Less, Normal and More are used for different times of fermentation or for boiling (pasteurizing) the milk. Below are some basic steps and setting options for making yogurt using the Yogurt setting button. Yes, technically, because the cooker will take a longer time to come to full high pressure. But using low pressure to save time will not work as certain foods won’t be sufficiently cooked. High pressure is the default cooking setting for most recipes. What is the timer button for?

Step 8. Preheating & pressurizing stage beings. After a few seconds, you will hear 3 beeps and the control panel will display On. Two status icons will appear at the top: Heating Up (little pot with fire) & Pressure Cooking (P). There is also a Manual module, but I only recommend it for more experienced users. In Manual mode, you get to select your own settings (like manual pressure setting), but if you don’t know how the pot works, there’s the risk of the food coming out over- or under-cooked. Cooking heat-sensitive vegetables and protein that can be easily overlooked (e.g.Broccoli, carrots, fish, seafood, eggs) I'm thoroughly impressed with the Instant Ace Nova Blender, and it's functionalities go way beyond the the smoothies and margaritas I usually think to make.

Preheating & pressurizing stage– the pot heats up creating steam and pressure inside. This takes 5-20 minutes depending on how much food and liquid you add. Note: food starts to cook during this stage, kind of like when you boil potatoes on the stove – they start to cook even before the pot comes to a boil, although most of the cooking happens once the water is super hot. Star the Instant Pot. Insert the inner pot into the cooker base. Do not use the lid for the next step. Want to control your Instant Pot from your phone or tablet? The Instant Pot Smart Wi-Fi is a 6 quart Instant Pot with all the great options you love, but it also offers you wireless access to the Instant Pot app. This Instant Pot 7 in 1 will let you steam, sauté, pressure cook and more, and you can control your device and find recipes inspiration right on your phone. Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1 We also liked the fact that it’s available in multiple sizes, so different sized households can make the most out of this model’s combination of price and performance. However, we do find it a bit light on presets compared to a lot of Instant Pots, though at least they’re easily customizable. Also, be aware that there’s no air fryer functionality on here. So, if you want a multi-cooker to replace all your other kitchen appliances, this might not be the one. The short answer is yes. Some Instant Pot models e.g. Ultra and MAX will allow you to set your altitude and the cooking times will be automatically adjusted for you. Otherwise, cooking should be adjusted 5% for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 ft. above sea level.

The Sauté is another non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, it’s important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. When cooking with large liquid volume or starchy foods (e.g. porridge, congee, pasta, soup, etc.). The liquid can get foamy and may splatter out from the Steam Release Valve. Sauté is a non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, it’s important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way.

Bear in mind, while it can sauté, the pan has limited surface area for searing larger cuts of meat. The Instant Pot Pro is a modest step up from the Duo Plus. The Pro enjoys a baking mode which gives it an edge, but an optional air fryer add-on is available for the Duo Plus. The Duo Plus is available in a 3-quart version if you need something with a smaller footprint, while the Pro has a whooping 28 one-touch smart cooking programs available, and an interface with lots of control available. It’s a close call between these two. Instant Pot Pro versus Max The controls are easy to use with a digital display that's bright and clear. On the downside, there are no handles to remove the cooking bowl or hold it comfortably. Also, use caution when removing the lid, keeping your hands away from the pressure indicator as it can release steam. Instant Pots and other multi-cookers come in an array of different capacities ranging from 3 quart / 3 liters right up to 8 quart / 7.5 liters, so knowing which size Instant Pot is best for you can be confusing. Some models have a button that reads ‘Timer’. While you may think that this is the button that sets the cooking time for your Instant Pot, it actually delays cooking time and will start the cooking when the timer counts down. You can set the cooking time with the plus/minus buttons or the dial, depending on the model. Do I need to adjust my recipes AT higher altitudes?

We reviewed the 8-quart/ 7.6-liter model which measures 14.5 x 13.5 x 14.8 inches/ 36.8 x 34.3 x 37.6cm (h x w x d) and is a similar size to other large capacity multi-cookers we’ve reviewed, but as we've already mentioned it’s also available as a 6-quart/ 5.7-liter option, and in the US and Australia, there’s a smaller 3-quart/ 3-liter version available if you have a small family or you’re short on space. You might be wondering, does anyone actually use all those Instant Pot buttons? Some people find them to be a guiding light and others are put off by just how many there are. It also doesn’t help that many recipes designed for the Instant Pot tend to use manual settings rather the pre-programmed options. During our tests, the Instant Pot Duo Nova performed well when pressure cooking meat dishes, stews and casseroles, but was a little disappointing when cooking rice and steaming vegetables. When you want to use your pressure cooker for large meals, the Instant Pot Viva will be your go-to device. This roomy 8 quart Instant Pot 9 in 1 combines 9 small appliances in 1 device, and it pressure cooks, sautés, sterilizes, and cook rice. Instant Pot Duo Nova The Instant Pot Pro is approaching the higher end of the lineup. Its major contribution is a baking function, so you can make cakes of all kinds. It also upgrades the number of cooking programs to 28, the most of any Instant Pot family. With an Instant Pot Duo Plus, there’s no limit to what you can create in the kitchen. This 6 quart pressure cooker is big enough for family meals, and it has 15 microprocessor controlled programs to cook food perfectly. The Instant Pot 9 in 1 also has 10 safety mechanisms built in, so you never have to worry about learning to use it. Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1
