Description

Silicone sheets are safe for use on most types of skin. However, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to speak to your doctor before using silicone sheets. In rare cases, silicone sheets can cause an allergic reaction. Anybody who has recently had a surgery or traumatic injury such as a burn or cut can benefit from using silicone gel. Patients who tend to scar excessively and are predisposed to keloids and hypertrophic scars are good candidates for silicone gel treatment. Abnormal scar types are generally linked to genetics. However, wound infection and re-injury are common reasons that a person may scar excessively after the wound has healed. If this occurs, it can be comforting knowing that a treatment option is available for all scar types.

Controlled abrasion or planing of upper to mid skin layers. This technique has largely been replaced with advanced methods such as laser resurfacing. It is important not to apply sheeting if you plan on swimming, sweating, or bathing. Remove the strips before working out and showering. Do not use the gel sheet on open wounds. If you develop a wound in your scar, remove the gel sheet and keep it safe until the wound is healed. Applying makeup directly over a silicone scar sheet is not recommended, as it may compromise the sheet’s occlusive properties and effectiveness. Apply makeup around the sheet’s edges, or remove the sheet temporarily when applying makeup to the scar area. Do silicone scar sheets have waterproof properties? Do not throw the gel sheet away if you develop any irritation or redness in response to using it. Remove the sheet, wash and dry your skin. Leave the sheet off until the symptoms resolve, then try it again, building up the skin tolerance slowly Must be carried out by a cosmetic/healthcare professional. Depending on the laser used, results can be short or long term. Wash the gel sheet daily using lukewarm soapy water, rinse well and dry by patting it with a non-fluffy towel.

Mederma: A popular brand in the scar treatment industry, Mederma offers advanced scar gel in addition to silicone scar sheets, providing options for both topical and adhesive treatments. Our study did face several limitations. Although scar maturation can continue for up to a year after surgery, we followed scar progression for only 3 months. Previous studies that evaluated the efficacy of silicone gel in scar management also typically followed scar progression for a 2- to 4-month period ( 4 , 19 , 20 , 21). We believe this is because many clinicians regard that the early stage of scar remodeling is the time of greatest change. An additional limitation was that our study population was small and consisted solely of Korean patients. Finally, when using the silicone gel sheet, patients who also used tape or bandaging to secure the sheet in arbitrary fashion may have influenced the pigmentation of their scars.SGS has remained the favored clinical scar therapy since its efficacy in the management of hypertrophic and keloid scars became more widely recognized throughout the 1980s. Since these early studies, 1, 30, 31 the subject of scar therapy has advanced dramatically along with clinical evidence, commercial engagement, and consumer interest. 32–36 This progression has been driven by the ongoing clinical support which continues to raise interest and awareness of the efficacy of SGS in scar management in comparison to the alternatives. 32, 37, 38

Skin injury which extends deep in to the dermal and subdermal tissue such as burns, abrasions, and highly invasive surgical procedures can lead to the formation of highly contracted scar tissue which over time can lead to physical restrictions. This has a pronounced effect when the injury occurs in children as restriction caused by contracted scar tissue worsens as the child grows and can require repeated surgical intervention to resolve.

Silicone scar sheets are generally considered safe and have minimal risks associated with their use. Some individuals may experience mild skin irritation or an allergic reaction to the silicone material, although this is rare. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional. Can silicone scar sheets be used in conjunction with other scar treatments? Did you know that silicone has been used for more than 30 years in the treatment of scars? In fact, an article published in the scholarly journal Aesthetic Plastic Surgery states that in the treatment arsenal at the disposal of the plastic surgeon, topical silicone therapy usually is considered the first line of treatment. We recommend wearing the sheets for 12 to 22 hours, making sure you remove them daily to allow the area to be washed and cleaned. Most people wear them for about 3 months. When should you stop wearing the sheeting? Keloid scars are a more severe form of hypertrophic scars. They grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and can cause discomfort or pain. Silicone scar sheets can help reduce the size and pigmentation of keloid scars and provide relief from associated discomfort. Surgery Scars

One study published in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery examined 30 patients to determine the efficacy of silicone gel for the treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids. Hypertrophic scars are raised and red whereas keloid scars continue growing past the original scar boundaries with a raised and often lumpy appearance. In this study, the patients applied a silicone gel as a thin film to the scar area twice a day. After 6 months, researchers found that the silicone gel produced an 86% reduction in texture, 84% in color, and 68% in height of scars.
