We reviewed the UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Robocop on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player . Given the film’s vintage and its use of special effects of the old school optical variety, the jump to 4K is a double-edged sword: little details are better, resulting in image quality that might even surpass what you could see in the movie theater in 1987, while the softness of the special effects stands out more. Verhoeven's peerlessly exciting and kinetic visuals were matched by a sharp script, iconic cast and exceptional special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Phil Tippett (The Empire Strikes Back).

For further proof, simply measure the destructive power of a real-world fighter drone against that of a clumsy ED-209 unit. The humour, action, pathos and none too subtle nods to a society heavily under the influence of its media, still all work just as well watching it 35 years after its release. The Improvements also include the Director’s cut footage, which on previous Blu-ray releases that I’ve owned had clearly not been remastered.Verhoeven has the chutzpah and the talent to do whatever he pleases, reveling in a freedom of kinetics. Much of this world-building is introduced via TV soundbites that relate atrocity with a glibness that represents virtually no satirical exaggeration of news programs. His discussion is structured and not often screen-specific, though he does break for screen-specific comments. Forget all the modern usage of CGI in movies, the original was old school, even down to ED-209 being filmed in stop-frame animation, yes folks, this is a film that is a big fave in my film collection and it was fantastic to see RoboCop (1987) back on the big screen, I do hope that Cineworld will bring us more special anniversary releases soon.

It's informed so many films since, yet nothing - not even the sequels (despite some excellent ideas in the second one) and certainly not the remake - can come close to this original. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The cyberpunk trappings and sarcasm separate it from the likes of Richard Donner’s Superman (1978), but, while Donner’s film is credited with proving live-action comic movies could become blockbusters, there wasn’t exactly a rush of similar origin stories in the ten years between the two movies. Sadly the remake wasn’t a patch on the original, see my review here, last night it was time to go back to the 1987 original and see how the movie was originally done, yes there are those differences in the new version, but for me, and this is just my personal choice, I still prefer the original.

Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more.Robocop is one of the greatest movies of all time, brutal, prescient, bitingly satirical, violently satisfying, blisteringly lean and utterly unforgettable. As RoboCop’s memories of his former life as Murphy resurface, only his ex-partner (Nancy Allen, Dressed To Kill) stands beside him to fight against the vicious thugs responsible for his death, as well as a nefarious top-level OCP executive orchestrating the chaos from above.
