Solon disagrees, stating that it can only be truly known that a man is happy by how he meet his death. His story prompted many lines of inquiry that demanded further exploration outside of my reading time; it incites you to learn more.

Like any good philosopher, Leach doesn’t give definitive answers to the big questions he asks, but his exploration and hints are the more interesting as a result.I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Last King of Lydia, not least because it is not exactly run of the mill, but also because of its ability to engage the reader and mix in a variety of settings, battles and courts across Asia Minor whilst remaining focused on the key issues of the book. I had never heard of the Lydian Empire but this book brings it's last king to life and tells a sweeping story of the rise and fall of empires, as well as the intimate story of slaves and kings. We gradually see what sort of a man can vanquish so many, choose so many destructive wars, and also leave behind a written legacy of religious tolerance that still stands out in a narrow-minded world.

They were veterans of many wars of conquest, and they knew that a king bled and died like any other man. Our features are original articles from our print magazines (these will say where they were originally published) or original articles commissioned for this site.It is, instead, a book that examines deep, sometimes philosophical issues such as the lust for power, wealth, happiness, immortality and freedom. Readers who revel in the material details of period costume, weapons and mores may be disappointed in this fabulistic treatment of the ancient king whose name became synonymous with wealth. She exploited the myth of Theseus to recreate an imagined bronze age Greece and she made use of the historical Alexander in a wonderful series of novels. Croesus is supposed to be king of an impressive empire, but I didn’t feel as though the story centred me in that empire of vast distances and countless people. The book does deal with some rather unpleasant situations like rape and murder which I wouldn’t expect to see in a children’s book.
