And although I can say I’m already quite well-versed in the world of homebrewing, choosing one online can still be a challenge. While the taste and quality of wine dramatically change with age and season, mead is supposed to stay fairly consistent through it all, just like its cousin the beer! How long does it take to brew mead? This one doesn’t come with honey too but that’s perfectly fine because I was planning to make Apple Caramel mead with clover honey anyway so I wouldn’t need honey that came from a kit. Type of mead to brew. There are many types of meads, and it is crucial to determine which one you would like to try out before choosing the best kit to buy.

Note that this one is the most basic kit available; meaning, you’ll probably find yourself purchasing a few “extra” items in advance of your first mead-making session. In particular, this kit doesn’t come with any siphoning equipment or sanitation supplies and, as you’ll soon learn, sanitation is the KEY to great tasting alcohol. 2. Homebrewstuff One-Gallon Nano Meadery Mead Starter Kit Interested in learning how to make mead at home? Our homebrew mead making kits yield three or five gallons and can be brewed using supplies from a beer or wine making equipment starter kit. Of course, we also carry all of the mead making supplies you'll need, from fermenters to yeast nutrients. SPECIAL EXTRAS INCLUDED: In this tester kit, we’ve also included a few handy home-brew helpers that could really save the day. The cleaning brush will make short work of cleaning your plastic test tube and other brewing equipment; the cloth helps you keep the hydrometer clean; and the canvas carry bag keeps it all together so you’re not running around hunting for a key component. Boil your water in a large pot. Once boiling, pull it off the stove and mix in your honey thoroughly (this is the point where, if you were creating a recipe that included various spices and/or fruits, you would also add those).

3. Master Vintner Wine Making Equipment Starter Kit

Being the true blue homebrewer that I am, of course I wasted no time looking for good mead-making kits to get me started.

Brewing technique to use. One of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world, people have discovered various ways to make meads. Knowing which brewing technique you will use allows you to decide which equipment is best suited for the job.Wildflower Honey : flavors vary in each region and season. This is the name given to honey made from the nectar of multiple flowers (or whenever the bees’ diet is unknown). No two batches are alike! A bit less predictable in flavor, but often affordable and easy to find. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Read the basics first before buying this as the manual it comes with is a tad bit advanced for complete newbies. Nevertheless, I love how it also has recipe ideas, as well! Accurate Testing for Beginners and Beyond: We even include an instruction sheet to show beginners what they should be looking for when reading their hydrometer. Whether you brew beer, wine or Kombucha, this kit can help you improve your product.

Perhaps THE original fermented beverage, mead predates both wine and beer. It was sipped by the ancient Greeks – who considered it to be the drink of the gods – and by the Romans, Vikings, Ehtiopians & many other civilizations. It was thought to be discovered by accident – when rainwater mixed with honey was spontaneously fermented by natural, wild yeasts. The result was something drinkable (and potent). Mead has likely been around for as long as honeybees have! The only downside with this kit is the instructional material. I mean, I appreciate the effort in providing manuals but you’d do well to refer to online instructions and videos, instead. Now this kit is for those of you who want to hone their mead or wine making skills more and take it to the next level…or for an experienced brewing junkie who just needs new equipment or a test jar.

In third place, Master Vintner with yet another great offering for mead enthusiasts. However, the Master Vintner Wine Making Equipment Starter Kit, as the name suggests, is for beginners but, technically speaking, has enough equipment to promote you to expert level in no time. The quality of the honey is one of the first considerations when making mead. In general, a lighter honey yields a lighter coloured and more refined mead, and a dark honey a more robust, richer coloured mead. Choosing which honey to use is a matter of personal taste. There will be variations in the amount of sugar, minerals and vitamins between honeys. In 4th place, the Mighty Mead Kit – The Everything You Need Honey Mead Kit has made small adjustments to the entire mead making process as it consists of cappers for mead bottles as opposed to corkers for larger wine bottles. The major advantage of this kit is that the smaller bottles can be easily opened and judged on the basis of how well your mead has aged over time. ProsOnce your mead is degassed, pour HALF of the DAY 2/DAY 5 yeast nutrients into a small bowl. Reserve the other half for step 11. Remove the rubber stopper. Scoop out about ¼ (one quarter) of the yeast nutrients from your bowl and VERY SLOWLY sprinkle into the carboy. Mead may immediately begin to foam – swirl the carboy to help it dissipate. Once the foam subsides, continue adding the rest of the DAY 2 yeast nutrients in TINY increments. This process may take 5+ minutes. Let me tell you this: mead-making is very easy and fun once you’ve learned the basics. So it won’t surprise me if you get hooked too. Because of that, you have to be smart and choose equipment with durable and long-lasting qualities, so you’ll be able to use them in the long run and make your money worth it. Value for money The part of mead-making where you’re involved is a fast and easy one. Those are the steps you do pre-fermentation, like brewing your honey and water and adding the flavorings and yeast. It should be done within a day. Are you a beer brewer ready to branch out and try your hand at mead? Guess what? This is easier (said in a whispering voice). Let’s get started!
