We used to have a lot of rubber bands that came in with the cards, and I would steal the sweets, and there would be little messages saying ‘this is for Gus, not you aunty Judi’, and we’d have a fight. Anyway, all the rubber bands that came in with the cards would get sorted out downstairs, and I would ask for the rubber bands. So what we did, like a baby bouncer, is to get Gus on the bands and I would come on and whoever was in the studio would let him go, and he’d fly through the air. A newspaper report at the time covers the opening of the store, but Dr Alan Butler explained that the journalist was uncomfortable reporting the two were a couple. The puppet was spoofed on Victoria Wood As Seen On TV by Susie Blake's continuity announcer character accompanied by 'Wally Wallaby'. Terry Wogan for some time referred to Gloria Hunniford (whose show preceded his on national BBC Radio 2) as Gloria Honeybun. With that, Judi went on to do something which even I don’t think I will forgive her for and punched an ageing Gus square in the face.

Roger Ollerearnshaw met Vivianne (nee Linfoot) in 1957 at the weekly Saturday hop at The Winter Gardens, on Penzance Promenade. Don’t worry, this wasn’t childish imagination; it was prime time Westward Television. Gus Honeybun is a Plymothian superstar and the mere mention of his name, whether through the adorable plush teddy we sell in The Box Shop or the children’s train on Plymouth Hoe, makes the young and old curious about this bunny rabbit. But where did he come from? Scene At 6.30 (Scene) 1 9 6 3 - 1 9 6 8 (UK) Unheralded by advance publicity, a new and vital ITV programme… Ian Stirling (28 October 1940 – 30 June 2005) was a British actor and television presenter, best known for his work with Westward Television and TSW.But of course Ian Stirling was one of them; he was an absolute dear, and very funny, and I really enjoyed the times when he was on, but I had absolutely no idea that he was sending coded messages out to the gay locals! That was extraordinary and I'm still laughing about it." He also influenced the network by rescheduling or removing programmes from the schedule and replacing them with local output. He kept his station’s continuity puppet Gus Honeybun, who was Ruth Langsford’s first co-presenter before later joining Phillip Schofield on the This Morning sofa, instead of opting for Children’s ITV network continuity.

Gus at this point interjected to remind her that 1961 was a long time before she came on the scene and that he had been there for many years prior. According to legend, Gus was found under a gorse bush on Dartmoor. However, a more credible legend is that he was devised to fill unsold advertising slots during children's TV broadcasts. When Westcountry Television took over from TSW on 1 January 1993, Stirling went freelance but did present a thrice-weekly Soap Review for the station's evening news magazine Westcountry Live and was involved in a number of regional programmes for the station. He presented a four-part series entitled 40 Years of ITV in 2001, celebrating 40 years of ITV regional broadcasting in the South-West of England. Whilst freelance, he also worked for Gemini Radio in Exeter during the mid-1990s. [4] He retired in 2003 and moved to northern France. Down here we had the best of them - Westward's logo was the mighty Golden Hind, and TSW's... well, let's just say it was known as the flying bras. It became quite well-liked though and wasn't just seen on the TV- it wasn't uncommon to see a TSW branded bus in Plymouth. People in Plymouth are being given a chance to have a selfie with legendary TV puppet Gus Honeybun. The bus was a deal with Western National, the local bus operator for Cornwall & Plymouth. They ran minibus routes that were branded as Hoppa, so one bus (Mercedes L608D C990 GCV) was given full Gus Honeybun branding along with the slogan "Hop on a Hoppa with Gus" and used on routes around Plymouth: It was somewhere we were able to go and be ourselves, basically, which is great but rather sad that it was done separately, that it had to be somewhat hidden.
