How will the flock adjust to a real school - one that doesn't involve mad scientists and genetic freaks? Maximum Ride and the other members of the Flock have barely recovered from their last arctic adventure when they are confronted by the most frightening catastrophe yet.

The books follow fourteen-year-old Maximum “Max” Ride and her “family” - six kids of varying ages, known as the Flock. Her powers include flying up to 350mph, breathing water, and hearing a Voice in her head which gives her advice (which we find out later in the series is really Angel). Fang has dark hair and wings and has the abilities to virtually disappear, and the key to immortality in his DNA. He joined Max's mini-flock in Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, though it was only temporary, as he died at the end of the novel. The Flock consists of Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, The Gasman (Gazzy), and Angel, and they are also joined by Total, the flying, talking dog.When Nudge tried to express how sorry she was that Ari had been Eraser-fied, he told her to save her pity for herself and that their first house was nothing more than ash. Among his creations are some of the world's most popular series including Alex Cross, the Women's Murder Club, Michael Bennett and the Private novels. Max, Fang and the others make a submarine trip beneath the ocean, rescuing Max's mother and befriending undersea monsters. However his wolfish-seven-year-old self showed through when he added that he planned to cut off her wings.

After a couple of fights, the story ends with Max and Fang acknowledging their feelings for each other.The Flock struggles to survive after the decimation of the planet, with many of their loved ones having died or gone missing. Martinez and her colleagues established the Coalition to Stop the Madness, spreading environmental awareness through the flock's public air shows, Max knew it could be dangerous.
