Ivy and Clara didn’t really pick up much of the different culture, same life aspect but their interest in the pictures more than made up for it. It’s fair to say that Jeannie Baker went way beyond any criteria requirement with her story of two cultures, Mirror. In terms of social and economic status, Baker made comparing the two very simple for the reader again. In promoting the work, whenever the English title is used, we’ve striven to have the Arabic title placed alongside it: the two titles together having become the project logo.

One of the joys of working in the medium of picture books and wordless books even more so is the wide scope for discovery and a spectrum of interpretations. This innovative picture book comprises two stories designed to be read simultaneously one from the left, the other from the right. It is usual for parents and great grandparents to live together as a family here, so the whole extended family eat breakfast together. Jeanne Baker’s unique collage art work using both natural and artificial materials such as sand, earth, clay, paints, vegetation, paper, fabric, wool, tin and plastic, creates a visually stunning display, both for little and big eyes. During my visit, and through the eldest son of the family (another Lahcen who could speak fairly good English and who interpreted for me) I explained the idea of the book and the evolving story. But it also makes me reflect on the similarities in the lives of people all over the world - we're all just family members at the end of the day. The book goes through the boys lives to show how differences in the way they live, but how some things connect them.

And so I came to meet the Bouras Family, a Berber family, who welcomed me into their home as part of their family. This picture book compares a life in the day of two boys from two very different cultures: one from Sydney, Australia, and the other from a small village in Morocco. The wordless book format allows for lots of conversations with your child about culture and the world, both differences and similarities.
