I got this lens as a smaller, easier to carry 'long' lens (as an alternate to my Nikon 200-400). Gave up waiting for an AF-S version of the 80-400. I was angry last month when Sigma anounce 50-500 OS but I must ignore it because is double the price of my 150-500 OS. But I'm sure this 50-500 OS is perfect for all the fases in sport, nearly and far. I got the 120-400 first, a lens that doesn't impress anyone at 400mm, but the 150-500 does perform a bit better, not least at longer focal lengths than the 120-400 (which is best at 120-150). Following the advice of SLR Gear reviewers it is used mainly at f8 and with as high a shutter speed as I can obtain and still keep the ISO sensitivity reasonably low. I’ve read this article a number of times since I use the Sigma 150-500 (circa 2010) on my D7100. I find that many of my photos suffer a bit from sharpness. I usually shoot in M, 11-point AF, matrix metering, with Auto ISO 100-3200, f/8.0 and 1/1250 – 1/2000. I also us in-camera sharpening on the D7100 Standard (SD) picture control set to 6.

Distance information is relayed to the camera, so the latest bodies can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens. But this is true for most alternatives too. [+] Also, re the d7100 autofocus accuracy, I hadn't really thought about that. It is something for me to test out though. AF: AF with HSM (hyper sonic motor), means it works on Nikon’s D60/3×00/5×00-bodies, plus there’s simple manual-focus override by turning the focus ring. [+] Weight: At 2090g (4.6 lb.) (incl. tripod collar) plus 150g for the lens hood the new Sigma is much, much lighter than its predecessor: the Sigma 150-600 HSM Sports was 2860g (without lens hood). It is still not a light lens. The Tamron 150-500 is only 1725g + 95g lens hood + 155g tripod collar, the Sony 200-600 is 2115g (without lens hood or tripod foot), the Tamron 150-600 is 1784g + 108g lens hood + 200g tripod collar. [0]There was no question that the Nikon D7000 performed much better with the Sigma 150-500mm OS than it did with the Tamron 150-600mm VC. The focus was much faster and I was able to grab a number of fast-breaking images with the Sigma that I’m certain I would have missed completely with the Tamron. Future firmware updates may improve things with the Tamron, but presently the Sigma 150-500mm OS performs far better on older Nikon bodies than the Tamron does. Sigma 150-500mm OS for Sigma 150-600mm C? Is it worth trading Sigma 150-500mm OS for Sigma 150-600mm C?

This lens gave me my money's worth and does what I wanted it to do. I use it on my last two trips - Montana and Colorado. Was a good lens for wildlife - on trails and in the car. I left this lens on a second body - and grabbed it off the rear seat when needed. Can't do THAT with the 200-400 or larger prime lens. A 150-500mm zoom is clearly for those wanting to grab a subject that is pretty far away. This may be animals in nature or action / sports-shooting. Image stabilization makes it possible to shoot without a tripod or simply relying on a light monopod. And the zoom range makes it easier to adapt to the distance from your target which cannot always be influenced under less than ideal shooting conditions. Just to give you a feeling how far away you can be for capturing the full height of an average person with this lens: from 15m to 50m is the working distance for landscape orientation on an FX-body or portrait-orientation on a DX-body. Alternatives Sigma AF 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM, 20% shorter and over 100 EUR cheaper but otherwise the same.Pentax don't currently offer any lenses approaching 500mm, with their longest lens currently being a 300mm f/4, so this lens may be of particular interest to Pentax users.

Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM - Nikon Fit

I've also used it with a Sigma 1.4X teleconverter, and although focussing becomes super critical, with perseverance it provides stunning images.

Open aperture performance of the Pentax at 300mm is impressive (and well ahead of the Sigma at the same setting), but both suffer loss of sharpness in the outer field. Although this lens isn't one of Sigma's EX series, they don't appear to have cut any corners with the build quality. Much of the lens barrel is finished in Sigmas matt powder coated finish, which looks very smart when new, but seems to show up marks a little easier than some other lens finishes.
