Description

Blanketweed deprives fish of light and oxygen, making the conditions of the pond very hostile and possibly dangerous. The murky look of blanketweed is unattractive as well and will prevent you and your guests from fully enjoying your pond. The main types of blanket weed control are barley straws, blanket weed control solutions, tablets and electronic devices. Barley straws will naturally break up blanketweed and create holes in the skin it creates across the surface of your pond. The blanket weed control solutions and tablets use different chemical formulas to treat the invasive weed, while the electronic devices in our range use a small electric pulse to kill the weed in the water. dense growths of hair-like green strands that float under or on the surface or cling to plants at the side of the pond – these are known as blanket weed or silkweed To treat submerged Blanket Weed, we suggest you use Algae Klear Xtra, which is a liquid treatment that will be more effective at travelling down to where the submerged Blanket Weed has anchored itself to, also killing it and cutting off it off from its environment which then allows you to again, safely remove it from the pond. Works on the principle similar to traditional barley strawtreatment but givesfaster results. No need to deal with smelly, decomposed straw.

Excessive nutrients from decaying debris, fish waste and fallen leaves can contribute to Blanketweed. You should regularly skim the surface of your pond for debris during summer, and use a cover net during autumn to avoid a build up of debris and sludge. Vacuuming the bottom of your pond regularly is a great way to deal with the build-up of sludge. There are also sludge busting treatments that will help. Liquid Treatments: PondXpert Anti-Blanketweedand Blagdon Barley Straw Extract are liquid treatments that you need to measure and then add to your pond according to the instructions. The advantages of liquid treatments are that you can measure the exact amount of treatment needed for the volume of your pond and once the treatment has been added it mixes with your water. PondXpert Barley Straw Extractand the PondXpert ‘Throw ‘n Go’ Barley Ballsare liquid Barley Straw treatments. Remove the plants gradually too, as the water level drops. Take the opportunity to re-pot or divide them if necessary – see our guide to propagating pond plants Blanket Answer is added to the pond by mixing with water in a watering can and pouring evenly over the pond surface. The water will initially take on a milky white appearance, but this will clear within a few days. Secondly, shade the surface of your pond to fend off any algal bloom. Without doubt, we have found that the best plants for surface shade are water lilies. When their leaves cover up to half the water surface they will provide enough shade to protect the pond from getting too much sunshine, keeping blanket weed at bay.

It went away – now it’s back

Earlier in this post, we discussed the characteristics of Blanket Weed and stated that the key difference between the two main types is that one is floating and the other is submerged. This is where that information becomes of significance because at Envii we treat them slightly differently. Lower oxygen levels in a pond: Blanket weeds can consume huge amounts of oxygen from a pond, which will cause further issues to plants and fish in and around them. A good level of oxygen is vital for plants and marine life. How to Cure Pond Blanket Weed

Sunlight is a natural growth stimulant, also known as photosynthesis, for all plants, including aquatic plants such as blanket weed. Try to avoid building your pond in an area exposed to full sunlight all day, as this can fuel algae growth. Also, avoid having trees nearby as leaves and debris need to be skimmed from your pond regularly as they can lead to algae problems. If your pond is receiving more sunlight than expected, then adding water lilies to your pond (so they cover 50 % of the ponds surface) will create the shade you need. Solution 3: Pond Aeration. Proper pond aeration can help increase oxygen levels in the water. Moving water inhibits the growth of blanket weeds and promotes a healthy pond environment. Return the saved silt and any saved pond water. Next, refill with pond (using rainwater if possible), positioning the pond plants as you go – see our guide to planting aquatics
