Although at one point, Bradshaw uses his intimacy with Pregnitz to lure him into an intrigue on behalf of Norris. Although Isherwood was living more or less openly as a homosexual, he balked at making Bradshaw homosexual as well. Isherwood may be using this form of sexual content to show the difference between fantasy and reality.its background is the Berlin of 193-33 a city of prostitutes and political gunmen, on the edge of starvation and civil war. However, the ending is questionable as to whether Norris ever really pays for the consequences of his actions.
