Description

Those wanting to work with wide gamut content for multimedia and HDR can achieve good coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space as well. Keep this in mind if you’re selecting any super high resolution display as it could be an important factor. They may want to run at max refresh rate without VRR active, or even is VRR is active they may know they will be consistently at the upper end of the range. Coming from the same game on my big TCL TV with its full-array local dimming and 1000-nit HDR, high dynamic range content wasn’t as good, but it was still more impressive than my DisplayHDR 400 monitor or ultrawide.

Just like it’s the case with all IPS panel monitors, some IPS glow is noticeable, especially in dark rooms and dark scenes, but it’s manageable. In the menu, you’ll find various pre-calibrated picture modes including FPS, RTS, sRGB, Reader, two customizable Gamer profiles, and two Calibration profiles for the True Color Pro software. It was also pleasing to see a decent IPS contrast ratio of 959:1 after calibration here, as previous Nano IPS screens we’ve tested have suffered a bit there like the 27GL850 at 848:1 and 38GL950G at 828:1 for instance. This represents what could be achieved through just simple changes to the monitor itself, and also what you could expect when working with content outside of an ICC profile managed workflow.

The screen has also been officially certified under the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ standards which should give assurances around its performance. HDR content has also received a noticeable bump with an improved peak brightness of 600-nits, up from 400, and 16 local dimming zones, earning it DisplayHDR 600 certification.

I didn’t test it with an AMD GPU, but it is also compatible with FreeSync if you have a Radeon card. I used the DataColor SpyderX Elite to dig deeper into the monitor’s performance and out of the box calibration. As for the image quality, the G7 has the edge here due to its significantly higher contrast ratio that provides much more vivid and deep blacks, but its VRR performance is not quite as smooth. In fact the image looked so good, it was not far off a native 1440p screen we felt when comparing side by side.According to LG, the 27GN950 also supports the 2560×1440 120Hz mode with FreeSync Premium Pro over HDMI for the Xbox One X.

A good gamma and white point setup along with a wide DCI-P3 colour gamut and good contrast ratio (for an IPS panel). Note that this doesn’t seem to apply when in HDR mode, that seems to interfere with the sharpness at non-native resolutions although 4K remains fine.We left the LaCie software to calibrate to “max” brightness which would just retain the luminance of whatever brightness we’d set the screen to, and would not in any way try and alter the luminance at the graphics card level, which can reduce contrast ratio.
