Amanda always reaches into your heart with her writings, and this story about Merrin (Merry) was so emotional. I really liked this book because it was not your typical romance read. After the first three chapters, I had in my mind exactly how I thought the plot of this one would play out. I predicted incorrectly and I loved the way Amanda made this plot unpredictable for me. I enjoyed seeing how the various storylines came together and resolved. The characters are relatable and human, and Amanda allows us to see their flaws as much as their strengths.

Amanda Prowse books are always winners for me so I was excited to read her newest book that came out on 1/11/22. Mother Teresa was one of the most admired women of the 20th century, and her memory continues to inspire charitable work around the world. She believed the greatest need of a human being is to love and be loved. In 1948, she founded the Missionaries of Charity to work directly with the very poorest of Calcutta. From the efforts of one woman entering the slums of Entally, the Missionaries of Charity grew into an organization operating soup kitchens, health clinics, hospices, and shelters in 139 countries, at no cost to any government or to those who served. In 2016, she became Saint Teresa of Calcutta. This is the story of Merrin, a girl like you & me..a girl next door 🚪..I related to her at so many aspects.. Other novels by Amanda Prowse include A Mother’s Story, which won the coveted Sainsbury’s eBook of the Year Award. Perfect Daughter was selected as a World Book Night title in 2016. She has been described by the Daily Mail as ‘the queen of family drama’. A comforting read, although at times I did find the pace a little slow. The writing style kept me going though, as just as you were getting to a ‘good’ bit, the author changed to another character’s point of view and that was part of the appeal of the book, wanting to find out what happened next…Deeply moving and emotional, Amanda Prowse handles her explosive subjects with delicate skill' - Daily Mail We follow Merrin's life journey as her future is ripped apart and she flees her home to try and make a life elsewhere. But, as we all know, the problem with running away is that we take along the problems that are in our hearts and our heads. And at some point, we just have to turn around and deal with them. And feeling that she was never going to find anything close to the love she had felt at the time, the story grows, showing how she hardens her heart to feelings too intense, pushing away so many people who love her, romantically, and otherwise. The book has a beautiful, heart-warming ending. In fact, the whole book is heart-warming with a great plot and even better characters. It's an easy but slow read and enjoyable throughout.

The story had heartbreaking moments and it’s not a fast-paced novel, it does alternate with what’s happened in the past and present. I have loved every book I have read by Amanda Prowse. She writes with so much passion that I can't help becoming a part of her stories. She is my go-to author when it comes to contemporary fiction, family drama, and emotional portrayal. When I saw that this wonderful author had written To Love and Be Loved I just had to read her book. Wow, she did not disappoint! I loved the family and especially Merrin's parents. The sisters' best friend Bella was a real tonic and had me laughing out loud in places - irreverent but caring, with a heart of gold. I also liked Miguel, who is instrumental in helping Merrin mend her broken heart.

I enjoyed the rich coastal setting and the captivating characters in this story but felt Merrin overreacted to an admittedly horrible event. It cost her dearly in the end. I also couldn’t accept the last-minute addition of a love interest who becomes the love of her life- all in the last chapter or two of the book. I think it would have read better if she woke to the realization of how much the chef meant to her. A story of family, love, loss, scandals and a wedding day that didn’t go to plan. It’s also about letting go and forgiving people.
