But, when a second body confirms his worst fears and the investigation leads him closer to the regime he despises, Schenke realises the warring factions of the reich are just as merciless and bloodthirsty as the killer he’s hunting...

A wonderfully compelling thriller, reeking of authenticity, and a terrific depiction of the human world within the chilling world of the Third Reich’ Peter JamesAfter that, they take up a mission which is full of conspiracies and threatens to endanger the life of the Emperor. The second novel of the series was published in the year 2001 by the Headline publishing house. The novel was titled ‘The Eagle’s Conquest’. An excellent story with a nice twist in the tale in a very repressed society about to go to war but already at war among themselves. Simon Scarrow is a UK-based author, born in Nigeria, and now living in Norfolk. He completed a master's degree at the University of East Anglia, and, after working at the Inland Revenue, went into teaching as a lecturer at City College, Norwich.

Every year, Simon manages to publish at least one book based on the adult Roman and historical fiction novels. The house in which he lives in Norfolk is a 400 year old mansion which was built by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. In fact, the major portion of Norfolk was colonized by the Romans. The author has managed to create a story that has a harrowing reality to it and he has dealt with the subject sensitively whilst also highlighting the abhorrent practices of the Nazi party in their quest for the perfect race. The two seemingly separate investigations are brought together seamlessly and along with Schenke you can’t help but feel for the men who have taken matters into their own hands to bring the guilty to justice even when you know that it will not end well for them either. What is to follow is a top-class and heart-breaking thriller, where atrocities and horrors towards children will come to the surface that will make your blood frieze, with particular SS Obergruppenführer Bouhler and his boss Heydrich at the forefront as the main monsters, and in these utter dark circumstances Schenke, Hauser and Liebwitz will have to navigate very carefully in their investigations when they encounter the power and danger of the Nazi regime, and after a final deadly tussle with forces from within and without the Nazi regime, ending with a result that's somewhat satisfactory to the themselves but especially for the Nazis, and all this is brought to us in a most astonishing fashion by the author. The twists and turns within this dark, gritty plot, and the fact that Schenke is diving deeper and deeper into dark corners and layers within important government figures and situations at odds with what he believes, takes this double homicide to a whole new level. The author, Simon Scarrow, is better known for his series of novels of the Roman Empire, but he manages to depict life in wartime Berlin with ease and Horst Schenke is a sympathetic character who one reviewer has compared to the late Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther. A really interesting and detailed take on the crime/thriller genre. Simon Scarrow perfectly paints a viscerally stark and atmospheric scene that really feels ominous. The secret Jazz Clubs and the constant surveillance do nothing the assuage the sinisterly feelings that arose as the blow burn style narrative unfolded. Instead, Schenke and his team turn their attention to the mysterious death of a young child, and what they uncover both chills them to the bone, and appears to be connected to the murder of the Berlin doctor in some way. They have stumbled across a huge secret which reaches far into the highest echelons of the Nazi Party, and in doing so, have put themselves in grave danger.
