These structures can also be removed and reused in different locations. This adaptability allows for relocating and repurposing the Gabion components, minimising waste. Gabions are baskets made of a corrosion-protected metal. If they are filled with earth, pebbles or stones, they become a solid wall, which is used especially in road construction or landscaping to safely fasten slopes (For all information on building a gabion wall, please refer to our guide article Building a gabion wall). As long as the gabions are not yet filled, they are light and can be placed where they are needed without the use of machines. Depending on which material you choose to fill your gabions with, you can create very different effects in your garden. These can not only be filled with stones in different colours and shades, but also with glass fragments. Since all shapes can be formed with gabion baskets, triangular raised beds with gabions, square raised beds with gabions, round raised beds with gabions and spiral raised beds with gabions are all possible. Especially if you build your own gabions raised bed, you can become really creative in your garden design. Filling of gabions For large and bulky items, a booking is made with you prior to delivery. Gabion stone provides excellent structural strength and stability. The wire mesh cages filled with stone create a robust, secure structure that can withstand soil and water pressure. Gabion stone also allows for effective water drainage, reducing the risk of water accumulation and erosion. Drainage Considerations: Use appropriate drainage measures, such as perforated pipes or drainage aggregates to ensure proper water management. Gabion structures have a long lifespan and need minimal maintenance. They can withstand the test of time, reducing the need for frequent replacements or repairs. This longevity reduces material waste and resource consumption over the structure's life.Availability and Sourcing: Choose a locally-sourced stone to reduce transportation distances and associated carbon emissions. Local stones are often more cost-effective and can blend with the regional landscape. These benefits make Gabion stone a versatile and practical choice for retaining walls, garden walls, terracing, erosion control, and decorative features. How is Gabion stone different from other types of decorative stones? It was challenging trying to figure out how to do this project. There was very little online information detailing how to build a small 2ft high gabion cage garden wall. So I will do my best to detail my findings, rational, and building processes. Use the crimpers to place three hog ties at each connecting side. One at the top corner, in the middle, and at the bottom corner. That me ans at this point there will be 6 hog ties on each basket. Do not close off your lid to the box yet.

I placed a cross wire every three to four boxes horizontally and applied them to each layer vertically(box layer). If you have voles and moles in your garden, you can easily keep them away from your gabion raised bed: After the soil has been removed, simply place a close-meshed wire mesh either under or over the floor grid supplied by HS Gabions before building up the gabions. There are even special plastic barriers to help keep the beds or lawn free of molehills. If the carrots in the gabion raised bed grow above such a grid, they can neither be nibbled on by the mole nor by the vole. Gabions raised bed construction Next call your local gas and water companies to come and do a free service locate on your property so that you can prevent damaging any lines when digging. For effective erosion control, Gabion walls are a barrier against erosive forces, such as water currents, to prevent soil erosion. The stone-filled Gabions allow water to pass through while holding the soil in place, reducing the impact of flowing water. We cut 14-16″ cross wire, long enough to wrap around the rebar a few times before connecting it to either side of the basket.

Garden design - gabion baskets for your courtyard or garden

Depending on how big your garden is, how many vegetables you want to grow and how much space you need, the number and size of your gabion raised bed will depend on the planning. Maybe you don't just want to build a raised bed of gabions, but several at the same time? So that you can easily reach the entire surface of your gabion raised bed, it should not be wider than 1.50 metres: so you can easily reach the centre with your hands. You can build your gabions raised bed round, but you can also create it as a square gabion bed, just your very own personal gabion raised bed made to measure. It doesn't matter whether you choose a rectangular gabion bed or a round gabion raised bed: Before you build your own gabion raised bed, you must stake out the intended area with pegs and a string and remove about ten centimetres from the ground on this area.

Sometimes, you can use Gabion stone with geotextiles for slope stabilisation. Place the geotextiles between layers of Gabion stone to enhance soil reinforcement and improve stability. What are the recommended installation methods for Gabion stone walls? First I used all of our cement debris we had left over from the demo of the old garden bed and other metal odds and ends we had laying around. I then made the mistake of using pea gravel as fill on a few boxes and towards the end of the construction wound up strictly using the larger river You want to loop each end of your wire in a fashion so that you loop around the baskets horizontal and vertical basket wire. I need to cover a length of 28 linear feet so I made my boxes to be (Y) x 2ft x 6in (Correction: 8″) The rebar will sit evenly spaced against the plumb line, as it will later be attaching to your gabion boxes.I have also used internal securing posts (rebar) to attach the gabion baskets to and prevent movement or shifting of the cage. We get a lot of snow melt and refreezing which causes excesses damage and soil shifting. Eric and I worked on this together and it went a lot faster than either of us expected. We started by unrolling our 5 x 50ft 14g all-purpose welded wire material.
