As usual, Alexander Gauge is wonderfully erudite as the disreputable Markham, another of his reasonable-criminal roles, while the British actor John Arnatt displays a convincing American accent as the man who takes charge. In a remote mansion Army Officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) only escape the charge of murder by finding the real killer. All copyrighted material (movie posters, DVD covers, stills, trailers) and trademarks belong to their respective producers and/or distributors.A fun little country house mystery which Maurice Elvey wrings as much style out of even though he is saddled with a hugely annoying and smug leading man in William Sylvester.

It's a tongue-in-cheek affair, which we thought worked well, except for a Bugsy Malone style performance from American Reed DeRouen. There is also some decent characterisation – for example, with Bassett the butler and his listening at keyholes and room of pin-ups – and much creepy sneaking about, which I always love. Mary Germaine is great though, and there are some attempts at lightness of touch which raises this above the average B potboiler of the time. A MATTER OF MURDER (1949) - there are no cast or crew credits on this poor old remnant of a film, but it's efficiently directed by John Gilling, who later went on to better things like the TV series, The Saint, and Hammer Horrors. The plot grows increasingly strained as it strives to keep us guessing just who amongst a number of shady characters has knocked off the blackmailer, and eventually falls across the line.Mary Germaine hires William Sylvester to accompany her to a rendezvous at a blackmailer's country house even though she suspects he may be a convict on the run in this low-budget B-movie that punches above its weight in the early stages before collapsing under the weight of expectation. American William Sylvester is ebullient as Jimmy and, with his mid-Atlantic accent, could well have made an excellent Saint. There is much intrigue and some witty dialogue to be enjoyed in this early fifties B-film, which reveals its small budget with its studio-bound setting and recycled score (at one point, it sounded like something from a Norman Wisdom film!

The story concerns a traveller who finds himself accused of murder after he receives a ride from a person who kills an extortionist. This proves to be a ride he'll never forget, when the blackmailer is killed by high-tension wires and the rider is accused of the crime. Less complicated than Agatha Christie and is a lighthearted contrast with the depressing films noirs of the same period. The script is clever and witty, and we loved most of the movie, although the suspense lagged a bit towards the end. William Sylvester, best known later for playing Dr Heywood Floyd in 2001: A Space Odyssey, stars in one of his first roles opposite Mary Germaine in this crime drama about two people attempting to solve the murder of a blackmailer. After some sparring from Jimmy, Carol agrees to pay the money, but is unable to withdraw it from her bank until morning.

Genre Drama | Crime Synopsis A blackmailer is murdered, and the police find that there is a long list of suspects who wanted to see him dead. House of Blackmail é um filme de drama britânico de 1953, dirigido por Maurice Elvey e estrelado por Mary Germaine, William Sylvester e Alexander Gauge. THE SIX MEN (1951) - an old fashioned curiosity but we enjoyed the acting from Harold Warrender as the Scotland yard inspector and Michael Evans as his sidekick. Even so, the sound stellar portrayals, coupled with the 'twist' ending, give it the benefit of any doubts. The latter has a touch of Michael Wilding about him and subsequently went on to considerable success in the US, notably playing opposite Audrey Hepburn in Gigi on Broadway. THE HOUSE OF BLACKMAIL (1953), starring William Sylvester, a likeable American actor with an elegant and throwaway style that's ideal for this Agatha Christie-like who-dunnit, about a group of people holed up in a country manor, each suspecting the others of murdering a blackmailer.
