One interesting point that I can't seem to find further details about is Dr Mary Elphinstone, a newly qualified 'slip of a girl' awarded an MBE for her efforts during the War as a Volunteer Medical Officer. When the Argentinian author Carlos Gamerro adapted his fantastical, surreal, funny, bizarre novel about the Falkland Islands into a stage play for Buenos Aires' Teatro Alvear, the reception was noisy. With the UN seeking a diplomatic solution, the British launched risky amphibious landings at San Carlos, Goose Green and Bluff Cove.

It is a skilful illumination of the continued purchase and contradictions of the idea of Greater Britain in the later twentieth century. There's also Ordeal by Exocet, about HMS Glamorgan, and even The Captain's Steward: Falklands, 1982. Interesting relics of colonialism, even in the 1980s, such as the repetitive mention of "Chinese laundrymen". Few, if any, of the public knew that informed military opinion in the United States regarded the Falklands operation as "Mission Impossible".In The Peace Protesters by Simon Hill we hear about the grass roots protest against nuclear weapons, the A Rocky war and The war waged against Britain taking north Ireland. The First Casualty – The Untold Story of the Falklands War” was the first book to incorporate all three sides of the Falklands conflict, to include the British and Argentine veterans of the war and the Falkland Islanders themselves in the first ever three-sided, first-person narrative history ever produced. I found the text to be well set out, with candid descriptions of what was happening, and some iconic photographs of the time. In more recent years (and I’ve heard this said myself by Argentine veterans) it transpires that many of the interviews felt a bit restricted and forced and that there was a definite sense of ‘get it right’ from the Argentine military to their still-serving veterans who were not allowed much lateral space to vent their full thoughts.

My first book is the result of journalistic good luck: of being in the right place at the right time.Lord Ashcroft, who has been fascinated by bravery since he was a young boy, has amassed several medal collections over the past four decades, including the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses, Britain and the Commonwealth’s most prestigious gallantry award. Reviewers reacted violently: they thought it was offensive and questioned national values and the legitimacy of the war. Falkland Islander and Stanley resident John Smith documented his war-time experiences in his private diary and then broke it up and hid the passages around the house should they be discovered. I thoroughly enjoyed this and it brought back vivid memories of when I was Fifteen reading the newspapers and watching tv coverage. He just couldn't seem to grasp the fact that over here we had Argentina, a country with a history of governmental instability and a military whose history is primarily political and, as it turned out, was not well trained or equipped.
