Complete with a VHS cassette, Nightmare, from designers Brett Clements and Phillip Tanne, took place in a horror-themed world called "The Other Side." Up to six players compete to collect keys around the provinces on the game's board, all while working against a timer on the video cassette tape. Ultimately, players will encounter the Gatekeeper, whose job is to prevent players from escaping The Other Side. If older players set the tone as a fun and non-competitive game, younger players will feel comfortable participating, even if they only find 2-3 words each round. Better known as Settlers of Catan, this game designed by German designer Klaus Teuber has players create and grow their own settlements on a board. The board is made up of hexagonal tiles, with game pieces representing roads and resources up for grabs. Numerous spin-offs exist, including several video games.

Some of these cards are worth a lot right away, others provide multipliers, and yet more require you to collect a set for bigger payouts. This means that there are multiple approaches you can take on your path to victory. (Just don't forgot about Puddings, which are only scored at the end of the game and may tip your score over the edge.) Perhaps the most famous board game is Monopoly, which has its origins in a game created by anti-monopolist Lizzie Magie in 1903, which eventually became The Landlord's Game in 1906. The basis of Monopoly has players go around a board, buying and trading properties and collecting rent from their opponents, driving them into bankruptcy until one player remains. With fake money bills, a mascot in Pennybags, and the Get Out of Jail Free card, Monopoly is undoubtedly an important part of the American cultural lexicon. Players play from their hand, and then pass their hands to the left for the first ten rounds of play. They then receive a new set of ten cards and pass their hands to the right. You're expecting something for families or kids: Despite being based on the iconic, family-friendly movies of our childhoods, Villainous is actually a competitive strategy game with oodles of depth. It's not a good fit for children as a result, and won't jive with family-members who are expecting something casual either. Here are a bunch of items that don't necessarily fit together in any collections, but they just stand alone as cool/rare items. The bottom line: So long as you're happy to do a little homework in terms of its mechanics, you'll find that Root has a lot to offer. It's essential for strategy fans thanks to spotless asymmetric gameplay, and being able to boost the experience with a number of expansions keeps that spark alive. Players roll the dice and make their way to various rooms, where they make an accusation: “Miss Scarlett, with the wrench, in the Ballroom.”

Riot Games, creators of the video game League of Legends, created a board game based on their popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena). It is a cooperative tabletop game for two to four players, with teammates working as the titular mechs to ward off armies of minions during a number of missions. P.S. In case you’re wondering why Money Bags is pictured when it’s not listed here, it got cut at the last minute because we don’t play it now that the kids are older. But it was a favorite when my kids were small!) Richard Launius designed Arkham Horror, which was based on the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and, more specifically, from a roleplaying game called Call of Cthulhu. Players are investigators in the city of Arkham, traveling through gates and either avoiding or fighting off monsters. Since then, Arkham Horror has received new editions and revisions, with one such release as recent as 2018.

Ragnarök is coming! The end of the world is nigh and it is your job to steer your Viking clan through battles to secure your place in eternal Valhalla. As you’d expect, there’s more than a smattering of pillaging, warfare and cunning tactics as you upgrade and develop your clan, and as the game moves through its three phases, you’ll receive help from mythical Norse creatures and fight other players for precious tokens. Canadian photo editor Chris Haney created Trivial Pursuit, funnily enough after he and his brother John Haney and their friend Ed Werner were unable to find missing Scrabble pieces. They decided to make a game of their own, and an institution was born. Players travel around a board answering trivia questions about geography, entertainment, history, arts and literature, science and nature, and sports and leisure. Several subsequent editions of Trivial Pursuit have covered more specific topics aimed at certain age groups or fan bases. The original version of war board game Stratego was invented by Jacques Johan Mogendorff in 1942, with company Hausemann and Hotte publishing the game starting in 1961. Each player controls 40 pieces, either blue or red, that represent different officer ranks. Players must capture their opponent's flag, a movable piece on the board. While the game is simple enough for children, Stratego is still popular for adults. Pros: Portable game database runs off a flash drive; nice graphical look; module system allows for a lot of customization for games, books, movies, and anything else you collect.
