Vampires that want to be able to live with people without needing to kill them often take a willing host who allows them to feed off them. I also loved the fact that Cruel Illusion talked about vampires and also incorporated these figures into the theme of magic and the circus ... a truly unique and never-seen-before union, but very successful! Ava is a broken but determined character and I loved how she was constantly having to change her morals based on new information. Her journey to revenge isn't as simple as A to B, and all the twists make it so fun. The troupe had a unique blend of characters that made them fun to interact with. Roman?? I think he was meant to be a ‘brooding’, ‘cool’ love interest. He didn’t serve. AT ALL. Just plain emo AND annoying. You didn’t have to do that.” I mean this on two levels: (1) Foster-whatevers get money to feed and clothe us, but that doesn’t mean they actually have to buy us shit; (2) Deb wears a nauseating amount of pink. Her scrubs right now boast pink kittens. Pink kittens. I don’t want anything in that bag. It probably has sequins.

Cruel Illusion è stata la perfetta lettura per il periodo di Halloween! In questo libro non mancano i vampiri, un maestoso circo, mille spettacoli e tantissima magia! Cycle of Revenge: The first vampire Numerius killed Lucius' sister after he first became a vampire. Lucius responded to this by killing Numerius' sister. The two have now spent centuries as archfoes trying to hurt each other more and more. It's escalated to the point that their organizations (Lucius' Society of Magicians and Numerius's vampires) are now in constant conflict with each other. I always stop for lost-pet flyers. I can’t stand the thought of animals out on the street when they have a home and a family waiting for them. This one’s a cat, and even though the paper’s yellowed from the sun and the ink’s smeared from the rain, I memorize the gray stripes and the name: Suzy.

Ava?” My name in her mouth is always a question that she doesn’t know how to ask and I can’t answer. Magic and vampires, what’s not to love. I fell in love with the characters straight away and couldn’t put this book down. I love how there’s little bits of information about real magicians throughout the book. I wanted to participate in the Fairyloot readalong but I didn’t have the time, and I’m kind of glad because going through the comments there it seems like I’m the only one who didn’t like this. The story focuses on the cutthroat competition as it turns out that anyone who doesn’t bring a suitable apprentice to the competition doesn’t just have their troupe dissolved into other troupes, but forcibly removed, maybe even have their memories removed liked the failed apprentices, and the apprentices realize that they are all fighting for only one spot against each other. The competitions are often being dropped in the middle of illusions and blindly guessing what they need to do, with a few actual performances in the middle where only one of them is eliminated. Firstly I want to say how much I absolutely loved Vampires Hearts and Other Dead Things, so I was really excited to read Cruel Illusions. I loved the little hints to VHAODT, it was great to have that link.

I open my bedroom door and close it behind me, leaning against the comfort of the solid wood. My room is brighter than the rest of the house. Deb painted the wood panels a soft dove gray. A purple bedspread and floral prints above the headboard give everything a light, girly feel. Silver-shaded lamps sit on white shabby-chic nightstands. It’s the kind of room meant to appeal to any foster girls passing through. Ava and her brother have been shuffled from foster home to foster home after her mum was killed by a vampire when they were young. She’s always loved magic, clinging on to the illusions her mum showed her to keep her close, while simultaneously training with one goal in mind - to someday kill a vampire for taking her mother from her. To sum up, Cruel Illusion is a book that I recommend if you are in the mood to read a book that is not too elaborate and quite predictable but full of magic, circus shows, vampires and with a cute romance! Parlando della componete romance c’è un triangolo amoroso ma non mi è risultato pesante o cringe, anzi devo dire che il romance è riuscito molto bene ma in questo libro ha veramente poco spazio quindi non spettatevi un libro interamente romance. This book felt like a blend of Caraval and Ace of Shades, whilst still remaining unique. I loved the magic system and the main plot was exciting and full of twists and turns. The overall atmosphere of the book was very magical and mysterious. There is a love triangle, which I do not usually enjoy, but I think this one was done rather well. I actually found myself really enjoying the romantic aspects of this book. The plot is fast paced which really suits this story. I loved all the characters that we meet throughout the story and felt that they were well developed throughout. I did find the book to be on the longer side and felt the start was a little slow but I did enjoy this book. After, we had a trailer, and we moved around even more, and Mom was a little bit different, like a fancy dress missing the sequins it once had. She didn’t talk about Dad very much. Cruel Illusions fascinatingly mixes Vampires and Magicians. While the book at its core has the typical YA formula, Fuston put enough of her spin on it to make it feel fresh and a fun reading experience.

I can accept, just, that maybe Ava is pushing Deb (and all that surrounds her) away because she’s too scared to be comfortable for fear of it being torn away from either her or her brother, a defence mechanism for being in the foster system, type response, if it wasn’t for the…I consider curling up in my annoyingly lavender bed and distracting myself by watching Criss Angel pull a quarter from his bleeding arm for the millionth time: a personal favorite. But I crave the familiarity of the night air on my skin—one of the only constant things in my life. It always calms me down.
