Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway novels take for their inspiration Elly's husband, who gave up a city job to train as an archaeologist, and her aunt who lives on the Norfolk coast and who filled her niece's head with the myths and legends of that area. But I will definitely read the next book in this series as I am curious what will happen next in Justice’s life. But as soon as Justice hears of the young servant, Mary, who recently died, she is sure it was murder, and believes that if she solves the case, she can convince her father that she can come home.What stands out for me with this book is the pace of events as they unfold: they are exactly as they should be, with enough cliff-hanger moments to make this book a compelling page-turner that you can’t put down. Helena was there in a dark tunnel in the night because she was meeting the French teacher, who she was in love with. The staff are mostly extremely forbidding, from the brusque Matron, the hearty and overbearing games teacher Miss Thomas, and Miss de Vere, the glamorous but commanding headmistress. Having been a fan of Elly Griffiths was delighted to find that she has started writing for the top primary/ lower secondary market where its so difficult to find books that appeal. The fourth book of the series, The Spy at the Window, opens in December 1939 with the announcement of England going to war with Germany.

It has all the right ingredients: strong detective character; a boarding school set in a big old house with turrets locked behind big wrought iron gates in an isolated place and some instantly suspicious characters. A book that will generate a good deal of speculative talk if it is used as a class reader, and is highly likely to be enjoyed if read privately. In addition, the setting is superb; I think I was frozen solid the entire time I was reading it-- which brings up a question.
