I also don't really know how I feel about the ending - it was very frustrating to read it but looking back on it I can appreciate it and realize how it only adds to the overall eeriness of the book, but I know some readers are going to absolutely hate this ending the way I did at first, which is another reason I knocked off a star. I read this book late at night and it gave me so much anxiety I literally jumped all the smallest sound off i the distance. it sticks pretty close to the realm of ordinary parental bravery, not liam neeson-badassery, which - although wonderfully entertaining, is only an option for people with a very particular set of skills. As a child, she remembers cradling a large, ancient volume, and stroking it, because she loved it so much.
