Description

Just imagine what kind of quality of sets we could have if people like Huw (or Sariel, or Jang for that matter) worked for TLG. If you are already in love with this model of V-22 Osprey, I do not advise reading beyond this point, as not everything is glorious about the set. To start with, let’s remember that one of the key features of the smart version of the hub is its ability to control the speed and the output power of the motor. As for the simple version of the hub, a motor connected to it will always run at the maximum speed. We should also keep in mind that the new Powered Up motors are quite powerful. Although the model includes several types of overload protection, there is no safety mechanism between the motor and the gearbox. And if there is a problem or jamming in any of the mechanisms, all the power coming from the motor can cause severe damage to the gearbox. Much simpler to assume that their stated reasoning for the cancellation was honest, to the point where I'm not sure why people thought otherwise." Anyway, I hope that's useful to somebody. If you've yet to build yours you should be able to make the modification during construction (steps 220 to 223) rather than reworking it later on. The only manual operation is tilting the flap on the rear wing using the lever on the top of the fuselage.

I did power it with rechargeables initially but it didn't work effectively: it wasn't possible to spin the rotors and rotate the engines at the same time. However, nothing was damaged! Completely agree with Huw's assessment on this that the real reason it was cancelled was to try and cover up this technical flaw with the gear box. As said, there no other reason to not have handed out early review models. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/2f82a38a7fbfa526d87416c128aa80bed7f8b6c48eb2775f658edb5935fbed2a/detection

So we now know the real reason this set was cancelled - the mechanics are fundamentally flawed leading to damaged parts. And Lego didn't state this as the reason for the cancellation because of PR. They didn't want their customers to know they had released a flawed product. So Lego allowed people to believe the cancellation was because of a small pressure group, and not their flawed product. I am absolutely crushed. I was really looking forward to this model, and thought the rescue colours were a great compromise. Think of it like a car. Let's say a wing mirror was prone to lopsided but can be an easily fixed with manufacturer supplied parts. No recall required. HOWEVER, if a car was liable to lose control at certain speeds cos of a problem in the suspension then it would need to be recalled for obvious reasons The way the gearbox has been designed makes it possible to channel power to all four movements at once, although everything pretty much grinds to a halt if you do so. It's prototypical to tilt the engines forwards once the blades are spinning and it's certainly possible to do that, but the motor strains a bit. What this list has: All of the DBG liftarms and panels and system parts in the part list above, but in White. That means it does include the parts in DBG exclusive to this set, but those parts are listed in White. I've substituted the two triangular panels with two 3x13 curved panels. That means it has 3 3x13 curved panels.

Thankfully, it's relatively easy to get the gearbox out of the aircraft to work on it. You can see the mangled gears underneath. Replacing them will require major disassembly, and really not worth it if it's only going to happen again. The Lego distributor in Vietnam put the set on the shelf early. I bought it. I paid a photocopy shop to have it scanned. Worked a treat and so simple! Thank you for saving this incredible model. Given how great the whole thing is designed, we can forgive them one boo-boo (it’s happened before). Afterall whats more embarrassing, not releasing a product because you admitting its shoddy, or saying you removing it because you want to uphold your companies morals?

Here is the official statement, confirming that following yesterday’s news, the set is indeed cancelled:

However, having read the review, and aside from the design flaw, it's just not a very good Technic set: it's perhaps too big, and the functions aren't as interesting as, say, a crane. Whatever the reason, you'd have thought it would have become apparent much earlier in its design lifecycle."

Performance

Ridiculous. Looks like there’s an online petition urging LEGO Group to still release the V-22 Osprey if anyone is interested. 1,500 signatures so far. Not bad.

There is also a real life white-red color scheme for the Osprey. This is the first flight (maiden flight) of the Osprey. V-22 Osprey model fills the gap: here comes a simple hub with two ports and two physical switches. The new simple hub has no sensors onboard and no Bluetooth support, so you can’t control it using a smart device. From a functional standpoint, the smart hub is similar to a combination of the Power Function regular battery box and an IR receiver, while the new simple hub is practically just a battery box with two switches. Physically, both hubs are identical. However, the simple one has only two ports and a LED indicator instead of a button on top. This Technic set contains some new parts that are currently not available or are difficult to obtain. Fortunately, you can replace many stones with the same part in a different color. The new Powered Up Battery Box was (still) exclusively available for the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey and therefore you must come up with a different solution for the time being. With the lately results like color problems, design problems, it seems something is very wrong in that business scheme. I then read a post on Facebook by Kenneth who said that he moved the gears to the other side of the yellow 'biscuit' that you can see above, and supported them more securely, which fixed it for him. Once they've been attached all that remains to be done is to cover the mechanisms, and attach the tail and the rotor blades, which are a bit fiddly. What this list doesn't have: All parts with new color listed in the previous question in the original colors.
