Working with specialist spirits branding agency, Stranger & Stranger, the ‘Social Distillery’ has created something which is the envy of many. They wanted to produce something which depicts the truly stunning scenery found on the island – and what a job they’ve done! Named CopperfieldH 2Gin, the special edition expression is produced in a limited initial batch of 500 bottles.

It’s fairly classic, I’d say, and balanced — not trying to do anything too funky. Its flavour isn’t dominated by a particular characteristic, and as such, it’s a versatile beast. The Copperfield gin is being distilled using power provided by an AFC Energy H-Power Tower which can produce electricity from hydrogen; by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air the fuel cell produces energy and pure water. So. A fine martini and a fine G&T. Indeed, I’d go so far as to say that Copperfield Gin is the kind of thing of which you could happily partake every night and not get bored. The partnership between the two companies in creating this unique gin is said to showcase the exciting innovation happening across Britain, as well as highlighting how hydrogen could support the decarbonisation of many of the UK’s gin distilleries. There’s a fantastic marzipan smoothness holding the whole thing together. As that implies, there’s a touch of sweetness, but that’s balanced by pepper and spice and, yeah, a bit of fire. Lime comes through towards the end, cutting the creaminess rather nicely. That sounds as if there’s a lot going on (which there is), but this is far from a try-hard gin. It’s pretty clean and subtle, in fact. I think that subtlety betrays a great deal of careful tasting and balancing on the part of the makers. I give it grade A for a Martini. To cook the pudding, steam for 6 hours, topping up the water occasionally, or place in a slow cooker, pour hot water halfway up the side of the basin and cook on high for 8 1/2 hrs.
