Working with specialist spirits branding agency, Stranger & Stranger, the ‘Social Distillery’ has created something which is the envy of many. They wanted to produce something which depicts the truly stunning scenery found on the island – and what a job they’ve done! Named CopperfieldH 2Gin, the special edition expression is produced in a limited initial batch of 500 bottles.

Remove the orange from the saucepan and save 250ml of the cooking liquid. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Copperfield gin is hand-bottled and hand-labelled. Its distinctive book-shaped bottle perfectly fits the hand for pouring. It is embellished with a stunning illustration of interwoven botanicals overlaid with rich copper foiling and pays homage to book covers from the late nineteenth century. It is elegant and utterly unmistakable. Pop the orange in a small pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil the simmer for 30 minutes, or until tender. Keep the water level is topped up.As Chris explains, “The pub has a lot of history, and is said to be where, centuries ago, a local police officer arrested a gang of regulars who also happened to be sheep rustlers. He became known as ‘The Surrey Copper’ and it just seemed to fit with the rest of our thinking.” We’ve enlisted the help of Michael Dunnett-Stone, founder of Craftr.co.uk, the craft spirit marketplace, to help. From traditional to modern, these are his top five. Copperfield Vol.1, Surrey Copper Distillery So Copperfield London Gin is rather good. It’s fairly classic, I’d say, and balanced — not trying to do anything too funky. Its flavour isn’t dominated by a particular characteristic, and as such, it’s a versatile beast. So let’s put it through the usual tests, shall we? Copperfield Gin and Tonic Our gin making process and carefully selected botanical ingredients provide the very best spirit flavour and aroma experiences.

The Copperfield gin is being distilled using power provided by an AFC Energy H-Power Tower which can produce electricity from hydrogen; by combining hydrogen with oxygen from the air the fuel cell produces energy and pure water. So. A fine martini and a fine G&T. Indeed, I’d go so far as to say that Copperfield Gin is the kind of thing of which you could happily partake every night and not get bored. The partnership between the two companies in creating this unique gin is said to showcase the exciting innovation happening across Britain, as well as highlighting how hydrogen could support the decarbonisation of many of the UK’s gin distilleries. There’s a fantastic marzipan smoothness holding the whole thing together. As that implies, there’s a touch of sweetness, but that’s balanced by pepper and spice and, yeah, a bit of fire. Lime comes through towards the end, cutting the creaminess rather nicely. That sounds as if there’s a lot going on (which there is), but this is far from a try-hard gin. It’s pretty clean and subtle, in fact. I think that subtlety betrays a great deal of careful tasting and balancing on the part of the makers. I give it grade A for a Martini. The Surrey Copper Distillery is teaming up with AFC Energy, a leading provider of hydrogen power generation technologies, to produce a low-emission craft gin for Christmas.

To cook the pudding, steam for 6 hours, topping up the water occasionally, or place in a slow cooker, pour hot water halfway up the side of the basin and cook on high for 8 1/2 hrs. Leave the pudding to cool. To reheat, steam in a pan for 1 hour. You can microwave for 10 mins on medium power, first remove foil and parchment then cover with cling film, but steaming gives a better result. Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and antiquarian books. Surrey Copper Distillery is inspired by literature, and Cooper’s book was the first manual to the art of distillation and remains an important reference work to this day. Cover the pudding with a pleated sheet of buttered parchment, then a pleated sheet of oil, and tie firmly around the rim with string. AFC Energy CEO Adam Bond added: “Hydrogen fuel cell technologies can be implemented today across a wide-range of applications as demonstrated by our collaboration with our neighbours at The Surrey Copper Distillery. The Copperfield gin harnesses the ingenuity of two local businesses to demonstrate creative ways in which clean hydrogen can be used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and support the transition to a zero-carbon future.”
