It’s been on my bookshelf for a while but I’ve only just got around to reading it. I also have Jodie Chapman’s second novel, Oh Sister, on my TBR pile but I decided to start with her debut. While I can understand the comparisons to Sally Rooney – the book did have a very Normal People vibe to it – I definitely could appreciate the story in its own right. Born and raised in England, Jodie spent a decade as a photographer before returning to her first love of writing. She lives in Kent with her husband and three sons.

It’s a great general fiction novel and the character development, plot and relationships kept me captivated from start to finish. Stunning. It was featured as a new release on series 2 of BBC’s Between the Covers. Another Life” is Jodie Chapman’s first novel and she freely admits that Anna’s character is based on her own real life experiences and emotions as a former Jehovah Witness and how she struggled herself with the faith. Featuring grief, faith and religion, suicide, emotional abuse and fear of commitment, the author has conveyed these intense emotions delicately and with empathy. I was looking forward to reading this, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It is a bittersweet read. There are captivating, intricate characters who feel totally real... but it is also full of grief and longing and heart-wrenching mistakes. It is beautifully written with lots of poignant lines that make you pause and think. However I feel guilty recommending this kind of book because it's not a happy, light-hearted read. It is raw, gritty and real. It's like a grey, rainy day, but when you're safe indoors. Ultimately, it's a story of two characters from very different worlds, stumbling through life and its challenges. They're always on the cusp of a relationship, but repeatedly pushed apart because of their choices, beliefs and obstacles. But there's always something.Anna and Laura were both interesting and loveable characters. I was filled with sadness as I read about the relationships they both had to endure with a self absorbed and apathetic man. A beautifully written story of love in all its forms . . .
