Description

Sophie wrote her first novel under her real name, Madeleine Wickham, at the tender age of 24, whilst she was working as a financial journalist.

I went into this book expecting it to be just like the movie (which, by the way I love), but it might as well have been a completely different story. Her job writing at Successful Saving magazine not only bores her to tears, it doesn’t pay much at all. Sophie’s latest novel, Surprise Me, published in February 2018, presents a humorous yet moving portrait of a marriage—its intricacies, comforts, and complications. Instead of doing what I normally do – look at the minimum payment required and ignore the total completely – I find myself staring straight at the bottom figure. She stuffs things into trucks, she keeps the letters in a drawer she never opens, anything to avoid the fact that she's got bills to pay. Devo confessar que estava à espera de mais semelhanças, o livro levou uma direção diferente, muitas situações alteradas.

With his parents and how they believe Becky fell in love with their neighbour Tom even though she didn't; and finally Luke. It has to be said and there’s no nice way to say it: Rebecca, the protagonist of this book, is shallow and a fluff-head (as her head is always full of recently bought clothes, it couldn’t be otherwise). An example is when the story aims to illustrate how branded fashions can increase Rebecca's confidence. However, she really grows up in 300 pages and even though she still has her flaws, I really began to respect her and want to continue on with the series. Also, I’m pretty sure Luke Brandon was my first ever literary crush 😍 I watched the film recently and hmm… I would rather forget all about it, thanks. But I liked the movie and this does sound enjoyable (even if parts of it are a bit bonkers) Great review! The book has that Bridget Jones feel but wer as Bridget is clueless in relationships Rebecca is clueless with credit and spending. Full of Becky’s outrageous ideas, including a heist à la Ocean’s Eleven, this novel does not disappoint.

I love the film based on the book and although the plots diverge quite early on (no Girl In The Green Scarf here), for me this made the story all the more charming for this reader. I stare out of the office window at a bus driving down Oxford Street, willing myself to open the white envelope sitting on my cluttered desk.Rebecca é viciada em compras, arranja estratagemas para fugir aos credores, não toma atenção a nada, muito sinceramente não sei como ela se consegue safar no trabalho. You can rely on the fate and good-fortune of womanly endowments to make all the trivial problems in your little, frivolous bubble of world disappear. Becky’s sister demands a vegan turkey, her husband insists that he just wants aftershave (again), and little Minnie needs a very specific picnic hamper: Surely Becky can manage all this, as well as the surprise appearance of an old boyfriend–turned–rock star and his pushy new girlfriend, whose motives are far from clear.
