About this deal

After the spirit turns into a giant monstrosity, Azula states she doesn't take kindly to "meddling spirits" and fires a lightning bolt at it.

I must admit, I was going into this thinking we were going to get a very shallow and rushed redemption arc for the character, but I was surprised to see that Azula’s journey ends up in an even more interesting place, despite the overall plot of the Airbender franchise being largely unchanged. Overall, I don’t think this story added to the world and definitely didn’t do anything for Azula’s character. For fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Azula is one of the most charismatic and compelling villains of all time, and a solo installment of Dark Horse Comics’ graphic novel continuations has been well overdue. Like that we were actually friends, despite you threatening my life to force me to join your Avatar hunt. The other Fire Warriors are visibly displeased by this, but Azula casually rebuffs them by saying that in war casualties are inevitable. If the abuse at the asylum is whitewashed or ignored or even justified, that will be too much internal inconsistency for me to handle. Subverted when Ozai hugs and praises Azula in a flashback after she first firebends, as it's framed as yet another example of Ozai only valuing Azula for her power.

They all seem to be “bottle episodes” that are driven not by plot extension but character exploration (Imbalance was the last main entry and it was clear this was not a main entry). Rule of thumb is never actually tell the audience a character’s fundamental wants and fears, because where’s the fun in that. Disproportionate Retribution: Apparently the other Fire Warriors weren't even real criminals before joining Azula nor were they actually insane; The reason they lived in the institution was that they were rebellious teens that didn't want to be pushed into the role their parents- the most influential and conservative people in the Fire Nation- had planned for them, and those parents responded by sending them there for discipline. She has won two Eisner Awards, for Superhero Girl and the third Nameless City book, The Divided Earth . You thought you were attacking a full grain distribution center with only two guards to defend it, huh?In conclusion, I don’t know what will make Azula in the Spirit Temple a good story, but I know what will make it a disappointing one. What first seems like a place to safely pass the night is quickly revealed to be something horrifyingly different.

Mix-and-Match Critters: The true form of the spirit has a spider's chelicerae and legs, the long body and forcipules of a centipede, but having skin rather than exoskeleton.

She’s an A-Type personality as we all know, and it’s difficult for her to find solace in a different way, a humble way she is not accustomed to. That said, I do think a lot of what was going on here could translate really well if it were animated, especially the back and forth between all the visions Azula was seeing between her family, her friends, and the odd spirit that set her down her journey, which for me brought forth the imagery of the yokai in Japanese myths. Additionally, the spirit ended up transformed into a gigantic monstrous form that reflected Azula's inner self. It was originally planned to be released on September 26, but it was later delayed multiple times to November 1, 2023. Young Azula is kneeling on the floor and holding a burning turtle duck figurine, surrounded by broken pieces.
