About this deal

It opens in London – where Forrest has moved to in the wake of her divorce from her Australian actor husband – when another mother visits her new flat and asks, “how did this happen to you?

I had no expectations and knew nothing about the author, as her story unfolds, the crushing honesty, beautiful writing and wicked humour captivated me like no book before. Having said that, there were parts of the book that I really enjoyed and that also made me reflect on my own experiences in a new light. Not to be missed… Disarmingly candid, she reveals how she put herself back together after shattering heartbreak. Her most recent novel was the Radio 2 Book Club pick, Royals, praised by Marian Keyes, David Nicholls and Emma Jane Unsworth. When I was a teenager, one man who – and I use my words very carefully here – had sex with me is now dead, and I know him to have been a very bad man, despite what the obituaries said. A sucker for a memoir – particularly one set between two cities in which I’ve lived – I went on to spend possibly the only sunny weekend we’ll have in Bondi this year spent at the beach with Emma’s book, and oh, what a joyful weekend it was. Emma Forrest is a master of voicing those human instincts and thoughts which feel too murky or ingrained to be articulated, and yet here she is doing so with enviable elegance on every page -- Megan Nolan, author of Acts of Desperation --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

In the aftermath of her break-up, Forrest embraces a voluntary period of celibacy, which she blames on the election of Trump. Trying to tell the reader that life in a pokey flat in north London was better than a life in LA was laughable. Some things she wrote beautifully about : how we can think our life is going one way and ends up going some where different and how the place you grow up is the source of all shame.Born in London, Emma Forrest began her writing career as a teenage columnist on the Sunday Times , going on to have columns in The Guardian , the Independent and Elle . And her ex-husband was straight up abusive at points but those behaviors are sort of described as just personality quirks. Alluring, shocking, welcome and wonderful' Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women From the author of Your Voice in My Head and Royals comes a beautiful, breath-taking, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. From the author of Your Voice in My Head and Royals comes a beautiful, breath-taking, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. But it becomes clear as the book progresses that Trump is a convenient peg on which to hang this retreat from intimacy.

A hilarious memoir based between London and LA, such is my obsession with it that I will read anything and everything that Heawood subsequently recommends. A beautiful, unputdownable memoir about love and heartbreak, sex and celibacy, growing up and starting again. Far worse, there is an offensive and needless attempt at humour in which Forrest equates muting a WhatsApp conversation but still checking for messages with trying to “shield myself from temptation” from snacking on a plate of chips by covering it with a napkin: “The paper-towel burka quickly lifted”. Her writing hums with life, honesty and intelligence and underneath the romance and red carpets is loneliness and vulnerability.

But the fact that she has written about this midlife excavation with such ferocity and frankness is cause for celebration.

She does not attempt to extrapolate universal meanings or turn her hard-won insights into lessons for other women in similar situations, as many such books often do. I did an English degree and especially enjoy poetic writing on topics that resonate with me such as this one, but the context in which these words were used (i. When her divorce coincides with the election of Trump, Emma takes a vow of celibacy, and it’s against this backdrop that she decides to abstain from both men and intimacy; having spent much of her previous life doing the absolute opposite. It made me laugh when she highly recommended being creative without having to worry about paying the bills.

Beautiful' Nigella Lawson'I adored it' Dolly Alderton'Wonderful' Lisa Taddeo'Intoxicating' Abi MorganWhat happens when your story doesn't end the way you thought it would? A friend of mine was going through a divorce and this book helped me be a better support for her, even though she is far removed from Hollywood-type divorce. They can stay a decade or a year or six months or three months or one night and what they saw with you will not go away just because they have. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In the intervening years she has published novels, written screenplays and directed a movie; still readers who know her only through the first memoir treat her delicately.
