About this deal

The animals are well drawn but as I explored the series I noticed that Lynley Dodd is most reluctant to draw human faces and goes to great lengths to plan out the illustrations so that humans are viewed without their faces showing, just showing their feet seems her usual trick, it's interesting to see how she tackles this challenge in each book in the series.

Repetitive rhyming book for kids, originally published in the 1980's - but, the book seems to have a nostalgic feel to it - I honestly thought it was from the forties or fifties. Seems kinda cheap to use children's books on my Goodreads book challenge, but quickly frankly I've read these books so many times I think its counts the same as a novel! With cumulative rhymes and sunny ink and watercolor illustrations, this international favorite chronicles the escapades of our hero Hairy and his crew of five kooky canines. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy combines simple narrative storytelling with virtuoso use of rhythm and rhyme, and Dodd’s gentle but energetic watercolour illustrations depict characters that are as well loved as they are mischievous. When Hairy Maclary bounces and pounces his way into the cat show, his flustering and blustering bring a very unexpected result . The one we've read most so far is Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack, but we just found Hairy Maclary's Caterwaul Caper and I think that might overtake it - Monty loves all the different dog barks in that one and has started shouting out "bow wow wow! Hairy Maclary, everyone's favourite dog, is busy chasing and hustling all the neighbourhood cats from Slinky Malinki to Pimpernel Pugh. I don't see what makes it particularly special, other than there are probably not a lot of kids' books published in NZ.

The text is written in rhythmic verse that flows easily and has simple rhymes like "Bottomley Potts covered in spots, Hercules Morse as big as a horse". But there's just something about this little dog, nothing but a pile of hair, marching down the street, collecting all his friends, like Hercules Morse, as big as a horse, only to be chased away by the vicious Slinky Malinki! The Hairy Maclary books are picture books that are designed to be shared by an adult reader and a young child.

Delighting generation after generation of children, Hairy Maclary is packed with vivid illustrations and playful rhymes. The gang go for a doggy strut downtown – only to be sent packing by Scarface Claw, the toughest tom in town.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Truly, the humour, the joy, the rhythm, rhyme and pattern all help to make the dogs heading for Donaldson's Dairy memorable, engaging and hugely entertaining. Esta serie de libros gustará a quienes hayan tenido un perro en los años 80, en que era habitual ver grupos de perros patrullando juntos por el vecindario y observar sus discusiones inocentes con gatos o con otros perros. The animals in this series, unlike the creatures of Beatrix Potter's stories, are not given human thoughts and motives. Hairy Maclary causes trouble again when he is simply not in the mood for the Kennel Club's Obedience Class.
