Tijdens de jaren in Antwerpen die volgden op mijn soloreizen naar India greep ik steeds terug naar dat ene woordje om mezelf bij de kraag te vatten als ik in een alledaagse valkuil trapte: opgenaaid in een ellenlange rij van de supermarkt, ongeduldig op het treinperron, struikelend over kleine tegenslagen. Kae Tempest (pronouns: they/them) started out when they were 16, rapping at strangers on night buses and pestering MCs to let them on the mic at raves.

In some of the parts that connected most deeply with me, it talks of the importance of giving yourself permission to be creative no matter what the quality of the output. On Connection came to me when I needed it most, and reminded me that the links we have to places, people, words, ourselves, are what keep us alive. It’s also Tempest’s first publication since changing their name from Kate, and using they/them pronouns. It is a rambling collection of things that sound meaningful by the nature of the topics mentioned and the heaviness of the big words being used all the time, but that carries little actual substance.
