About this deal

With a few units (including a Character on each side), a gaming mat to play on, dice, range rulers and a Recruit Manual to guide you through the basics of the game, you can’t go far wrong.

The Command Edition comes with everything included in the Elite Edition, but doesn’t include any addition models for either the Space Marines or the Necrons. In place of a Primaris Lieutenant and a Royal Warden, you get a Primaris Captain and a Necron Overlord, both representing senior ranks within their Faction. The books don’t get covered in dents and teeth marks from the miniatures and the miniatures don’t get battered and bent – a good way to pack a product like this. We’ll be back later in the week with a more detailed look at the awesome new terrain included in the Command Edition, but until then, head on over to the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page and let us know which Starter Set(s) you’ll be picking up. The gaming board also displays several lettered markers designed to work alongside the missions in the Command Manual. You can also support us on Patreon and get ad-free access to the site, plus a ton of minis that helps support some of the best creators out there!

Tucked in behind the Elite Manual you’ll find 2 placards – one for Space Marines and one for Necrons. On more than one occasion, my wife remarked that she felt overwhelmed just looking at the stat-lines of the units on the placard, which was something I was a bit oblivious to having played similar games for a while. Outriders: Take the fight to the enemy flanks from the back of armoured bikes with these far-ranging reconnaissance riders. Primaris Captain: A superlative commander and highly skilled warrior, a Primaris Captain is the commander of an entire company of his battle-brothers. What’s more, expanding your Elite Edition is easy – grab a Recruit or Command Edition, and check out the huge ranges for Necrons and Space Marines!

Canoptek Scarab Swarms: Flying hordes of these insectile machines chew through armour, flesh and bone with impunity. Stormcast Eternals and Nighthaunt are both easier to paint than Space Marines and Necrons and Age of Sigmar’s rules are generally more accessible. Now, I may sound like I’m being insincere here but this is a small innovation that really simplifies a core mechanic of the game. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES and the names of the characters, items, events and places therein are trademarks of The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Middle-earth Enterprises under license to New Line Productions, Inc.

Unless the newbie in question has their heart set on Warhammer 40,000, I’d say that Age of Sigmar’s Tempest of Souls and Storm Strike sets serve as better products to introduce someone to the hobby. Now it is worth noting at the time of writing this, we do not know what the cost of some of these kits will be when sold on their own, but we do have other similar products to compare them to. Assault Intercessors: This squad of aggressive combatants tear their enemies apart in melee with reaping swings of their grinding chainswords. This set also replaces the Lieutenant and Royal Warden with a Space Marine Captain and Necron Overlord, giving both sides a little bit more hitting power.
